PETA seeks to investigate elephant death at Little Rock (AR) Zoo
"Generally, a necropsy is performed when an elephant dies, but when Ellen died, the Little Rock Zoo shut down entirely and immediately removed her body for burial. PETA also calls into question the zoo's claim, according to news reports, that it would not release the location of Ellen's body in order to prevent people from exhuming her body and stealing her tusks, when, in fact, female Asian elephants like Ellen do not have tusks."

1. This will get lost of unrecs from the Peta-haters, but this is something
they do that no one else does...focusing attention of often bad treatment of animals by zoos and other institutions...knr.

I am in no way a fan of PETA. They're too extreme for me.
But something needs to be done about the Little Rock Zoo. It is a pitiful place. I've witnessed balding polar bears getting sunburned in the Arkansas summer heat. It needs to be closed if the animals can't be cared for. I think the city keeps it open out of pride.

3. I think that situation is like that for far too many zoos...
Hopefully this will get some action.

5. Well, I won't unrec because I'm a fan of PETA
as well as a card-carrying member. They do a lot of good work to protect the welfare of those who cannot speak. But there are some issues where they are over the top that I do not agree with.

4. Oh come on PETA...
You guys know as well as I do that if an American found out where an elephant was buried, they'd go out and dig it up--tusks or no tusks.

"Exhuming her body to steal her tusks" was probably what the zoo told the media, and someone forgot to point out female Asian elephants don't have any in the first place.
