I have an idea for a new Law.
A lifetime ban on anyone serving in public office from going into a firm that in any way deals with lobbying or attempting to specifically target holders of public office. Those currently ensconced in such work would have a two year grace period, after which they would have to seek employment elsewhere.

The punishment ought to include disbarment, fine, and imprisonment.

1. You are asking for the foxes to watch the henhouse.
They've already been forced by public opinion to make legislators and other government officials wait six months after retirement/leaving a job before they get into lobbying. Of course, what happens is, someone else is the registered lobbyist, and the schmuck with the connections is hired on to the firm as a "consultant" and not a registered lobbyist, but he goes to dinner with the target and the "registered lobbyist" and does the same job without the title.

Lobbying is how DC Bigwigs continue to rake it in. No one's gonna cut off their nose to spite their face.

It is a good idea, though! You'd need a congressful of Mother Theresas to make it happen, though.

4. If it could even happen...
I am sure it could be written to cover loopholes, but yeah who the hell is going to write it or support it?

2. It would be a good law, but probably won't ever
happen.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a lot of those in public office intend from the beginning to be able to go over to the lobbying side to make lots of money.

3. Yeah... a pity.
But yes this sort of law would be to repel people that seek politics as a doorway to big cash rather than public service.
