I was thinking about my representative today. |
|
She was the first openly gay representative to be elected to Congress, back in 1999. I found out only recently that she doesn't use her home address on any election papers because of threats that have been made to her for being gay. So she's had to live with that fear all these years. I can only imagine what it must be like to have that fear but still appear in public all the time.
“I am shocked and saddened beyond words by the horrific shooting of my colleague, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), members of her staff, and others at a supermarket in Arizona. Rep. Giffords was meeting with her constituents, holding public office hours to better serve them.
"Communication between citizens and their elected representatives is critical to the proper functioning of our democracy. There is no place for violence, under any circumstances. At the moment, my thoughts and prayers lie with Gabby, her husband, all the victims of this tragedy and their families.”
Rep. Tammy Baldwin

1. The promotion of hatred and bigotry in this country is disgusting. Somehow a |

lid needs to be put on it ... It's one thing to say it, but it's another to openly promote hatred and bigotry on the national airwaves and cable for profit by the promotion of hatred and bigotry.

I'm so sorry to hear that she, too, faces threats. I noticed that the Sheriff of Pima County in AZ commented that it is getting increasingly difficult to convince good people to take the risks of public service
I'm just shattered by all of this today.
