As we appear to be on the verge of eating ourselves (again), I'd like to talk about why I love DU.
In the last several days, I've seen more than a few threads pop up - and I'm not calling anyone out, merely pointing out a fact - lamenting and/or expecting and/or denouncing a coming apocalypse on DemocraticUnderground. To wit: Social Security and Medicare seem to be up for grabs, a Democratic President most of us voted for (however joyfully or reluctantly) appears to be on the verge of putting that which many consider to be part of our core principles on the chopping block, and the uncertainty that now lies between what we fear and what we will eventually come to know sits like a stone in our throat. Many here defend him, many here denounce him, and many more are simply waiting to see how this particular cookie will crumble.

Any of you who have been here a while - and I count myself a 10+ year man, which kinda blows my mind if I think about it - know what's on the agenda in the meantime: mayhem, madness, backbiting, recriminations, attacks, more attacks, AND A LOT OF CAPITAL-LETTERED POSTS written in haste and rage. I'm not stupid enough to try and stop it from happening; once upon a time I used to make such attempts, as have many others even to this day, and we all wound up exactly as effective as King Canute shouting orders to the tide. Death, taxes and a good old-fashioned DU meltdown: it is going to happen, and that's the name of that tune.

But.

I don't have the words to adequately express how much this place has meant to me, and means to me now. I have not always been the best member of this community - a kind euphemism if ever there was one - and I am equally incapable of expressing my regret for that. I have made great and lasting friends here. I have shared joys and sorrows here. I have written three books and God only knows how many articles on the back of the wisdom, information and insight I have found here. I work from home, in total solitude (except for the cat and the TV) for a dozen hours of the day, and have done so for many years now. I would have probably run mad and screaming through the streets by now, except for the fact that, with a simple alt/tab keystroke, I can leave whatever I was looking at or working on, and DU is there on my screen. A community - granted, a fractious, contentious one to be sure - that I have come to know and love.

And that's the rub, for me, anyway.

I could talk about the people I've come to know here, or the things I have learned, or the work I have been able to do thanks to this place. But that doesn't sum it up.

It's simple: DU is always here when I need it. I come here every day, and sure, sometimes I go away with a headache...but there is always a kind word, a sane thought, a good idea to slip into my hip pocket that keeps me warm. You can say this or that has changed around here, and maybe it has, but change is as much a part of life as breathing. The fact of it, however, remains as immutable today as it has for almost eleven years: DU is here for you, and that is a good thing. A great thing. A thing to remember.

I'm not asking anyone here to refrain from anything, any angry words, any heated arguments, any eruptions. That's going to happen no matter what, I fear, especially if the issues before us go undecided for an exaggerated length of time...or if they go the way many of us fear they will. But that is a discussion for another thread.

I'm just asking you to remember to be grateful for this little space. Remember that it's always here for you, as it has been for almost eleven years now.

Don't take that for granted.

Just a thought.

Thank you, DU. Thank you so much for being here every single time I've needed you.

10 years! WTH!?! I can't believe it...DU for better or worse has kept my sanity in check and there is no thanks in the world that I could give to make us even.

We fight, we make up, we fight some more...welcome to DU.

17. well some guidelines might have helped
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=111601

This place is a little bit like an online Cheers. You walk in and go "evening everybody" and they all go "hfojvt!" some perhaps with a groan or a roll of their eyes. Somebody's gotta be the Cliffy, always spouting some nonsense like he knows it all and then you've got your pompous (but still very smart) Frasiers and Dianes as well as the scrappy Carlas, the preening Sammys and the affable but somewhat clueless Coaches and Woodys. But it is a bar with a lot more bench-clearing brawls. Like one of those wild west bars with chairs being smashed over people's heads and people being punched and flipping over tables. But since nobody really gets their nose broken or a concussion or 3rd degree burns, all the ruckus just makes it more of a fun place to hang out, particularly if one likes a good verbal swordfight. The palpable hits really can leave a mark though on the old ego, but like Robin Hood, the simple answer is just to "get up, move faster".

(And now I imagine Daffy Duck going 'ah ho, ah ha, guard, parry, turn, thrust, spin' and then whacking himself in the snout)

22. How could you forget Norm?
Normisms -- funny lines from Norm on Cheers

1. COACH: What would you say to a glass of beer, Norm?
NORM : Going Down?

2. COACH: What would you say to a glass of beer, Norm?
NORM : Daddy wuvs you.

3. COACH: What's shaking, Norm?
NORM : All 4 cheeks and a couple of chins.

4. COACH: What'll it be, Normie?
NORM : Just the usual Coach. I'll have a froth of beer and a snorkel.

5. SAM : What'll you have, Norm?
NORM : Well I'm in a gambling mood, Sammy. I'll have a glass of whatever
comes out of that tap.
SAM : Oh, Looks like beer, Norm.
NORM : Call me Mister Lucky.

6. WOODY: Hey Mr. Peterson, there's a cold one waiting for you.
NORM : I know, and if she calls, I'm not here.

7. WOODY: Hey Mr. Peterson, Jack Frost been nipping at your nose?
NORM : Yep. Now let's get Joe Beer nipping at my liver, huh?

8. COACH: Can I draw you a beer, Norm?
NORM : No, I know what one looks like. Just pour me one.

9. COACH: How about a beer, Norm?
NORM : Hey I'm high on life, Cooach....Of course, beer is my life.

10. COACH: How's a beer sound, Norm?
NORM: I don't know. I usually finish them before they get a word in.

11. SAM: What's new, Norm?
NORM: Terrorists, Sam. They've taken over my stomach & they're demanding beer.

12. WOODY: What's the story, Mr. Peterson?
NORM: The Bobbsey Twins Go to the Brewery. Let's cut to the happy ending.

Actually I sorta got Norm first, since he's the one who walks in and says "evening everybody" and the whole bar gores "Norm!"

My favortie Normism is non-beer related though, since I hate beer and its effects on the world.

Woody (or Coach) asks him "How is it going, Norm?" and he says "it's a dog eat dog world and I'm wearing milkbone underwear".

Thank you for this thread, Will. I always learn something consequential or fascinating or both within minutes of logging on here, always. I always find passion and substance and intelligent caring people here debating both the obvious and the obscure in ways that always make me think a little deeper.

I am learning from people of all walks of life, all have voices here, and everyone gets heard. That goes a long long way toward creating a very special community.

37. okay, so I know I'm considered a "new" person here...it took a couple
of years of lurking before I even got a profile, then a couple more of just adding my 2 cents of drivel before I was brave enough to actually post something.

There are a dozen or so posters that I eagerly look for to read their gems of insight - yours is one. So pat yourself on the back, mister. You have a following.

p.s. I'm an old lady, been a proud liberal Democrat my entire voting life. Some politicians of my party have disappointed me; I've sat out an election or two because I just couldn't hold my nose and fill in the blank. DU provides an important outlet - your post reminded me of that. thanks

LOL, Mr. Pitt is a wonderful, passionate man, who does not suffer fools gladly and sometimes grabs a bear when a Valium would be a better choice. The first time he got kicked off here and I realized that I was going to stay, was interesting. What does a Will Pitt groupy do when her raision d'etre is gone. Branch out, become a wonk. And I did. Then he came back and I made sure to read all of his stuff on top of my heavy class load (becoming a wonk is not a fluffy endeavor).

I think he's going to stick this time and I am glad.

33. Very well said
I don't know where else I'd rather go to rant/commiserate/lament/celebrate/....
Yes there are extremes on both ends but mostly DU is made up of thoughtful intelligent progressive people.

Where else could I go? I simply do NOT understand a couple of high-profile respected members who publicly quit DU because the heat got too much for them.

When it is looking more and more like our Democratic President USED us, his liberal base, to get into office with our volunteer work and votes only to turn around and betray much (not all) of what we stand for, I don't know how else these quitters think we should act.

DU is an organic entity. It flows with the tide. From the dark days of the Bush crime family to the absolute elation of FINALLY a Democrat in office, not only that but the first black President, and furthermore one that never voted for the Iraq war, said he would close Guantanamo, hinted at universal healthcare, rolling back tax breaks for the wealthy, and getting to the bottom of the Wall Street shenanigens, protecting SS and medicare, etc etc etc... only to find out he is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

The reason I supported Obama over Hillary was that he seemed the most progressive of the two. Now I realize that Hillary could not have been any worse. And in fact I would trust her more as at least she did not promise the hope and change that we all thought was progressive change. Instead the "change" was to shut out the liberal "retards" and move the Democratic party to the right.

I appreciate Skinner and the other admins allowing DU to naturally flow with the sentiment of the Democratic base, even if that means some harsh criticism of the Democratic President. This is the place we can debate honestly and openly. It is such a treasure.

40. K&R. This is actually a good indicator of
the closeness of the family here. Family has petty squabbles. I don't see anyone here (maybe there are rare exceptions) genuinely hating other members. There may be disagreements and arguments and even anger (sometimes lots of it), but that's all a part of family. Where our true character shows is when one of our own is in need. It's amazing to see how quickly we'll ALL come together to offer our love and support. That's what really impresses me about this place. I doubt you'll see this on an economically right-wing board because their whole world view and philosophy is based on "I got mine, screw you".

49. I've only been here a few months, but ...
If you can excuse the unnecessary name-calling, personal vitriol, and ad hominem attacks, I think there is a healthy exchange of ideas. It seems that the U.S. is in the middle of a time of political change, and no one knows how it will shake out. Personally, I approve of the social programs created by the old German / Prussian industrialists, and enacted in the U.S. during the New Deal. Without those programs, there was a lot of unrest during the last Depression. But if the "safety net" is destroyed, maybe it will finally unite the working people kept separated by the false gods of party politics.

The Republicans scream and warn us to be afraid of Big Government.
The Democrats scream and warn us to be afraid of Big Business.

Ike Eisenhower tried to warn us that they were the same thing.
