Crazy or not, the shooter was inspired to commit an act of political violence
I can hear it now: "The unfortunate product of a sick mind; random, unanticipated, unavoidable, like an act of God...". Whatever Laughner's mental state, it's quite clear where he got his inspiration. The people responsible for the right's 24/7 hate messaging must know it will act as a homing beacon and call to arms to the mentally unsound. They *are* culpable, and must be held accountable.

Says me!

3. Was he influenced by a 50 year old Tea Bagger?
Was his unstable mind manipulated by a Tea Bagging coward that couldn't pull the trigger himself?
This would be just the thing an Tea Bagger would do.

8. If he is mentally ill, please at least have the grace not to call him "crazy".
Those who are mentally ill have enough to suffer with. Those who are responsible for inciting or encouraging or using him to further their agenda should be held responsible.

10. You are probably right
I suppose there are other mendacious right wing media personalities besides Glenn Beck who stupidly attempt to conflate the writings of Karl Marx with Hitler, but we kn ow that at least Beck has one big, big bullhorn to promote such nonsense. I don't klnow how much Laughner was under Beck's influence, but it is interesting that among his favorite books are the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf. I don't know of very many people who embrace one of those books who aren't repelled by the other.

11. I disagree.
You have to have SOME ability to comprehend your reality in order to commit an act of political violence. This poor guy was not able to comprehend much at all. I feel for the victims and their families, but I feel for this guy, too. When he gets on the proper medication, he's going to be extremely surprised at the situation he finds himself in. This is just a tragedy all around.

16. I see... someone follows the RW rhetoric to it's logical conclusion
but because they are of questionable sanity there's no connection between the act and the message?

21. Sorry, I haven't been following the right wing rhetoric on this issue.
It's nice to see someone is taking care of that end, though.

Is it still okay to disagree with someone on DU without being called a rightwinger? Apparently not.

17. You are projecting
you don't know that. He comprehended that he was going to shoot someone with a semi-automatic handgun. He comprehended that it was a representative of our government.
Quit being a pamby-ass apologist. I have no doubt that he's derranged, but he had enough where with all to do what he did.

12. I think even people on the edge, if they listen to the hate-speech enough,
will eventually go ballistic and act out violently. There's too much bullet-point brainwashing going on along with repeating lies over and over.

14. "Sick" vs. "Well" is a spectrum, and this is WHY people need to avoid violent rhetoric.
Or has the GOP been thinking that there were NO "sick" people out there who'd do such a thing???

15. Of course they know it
why do you think Sara Palin's page of targeting Congress woman Giffords was taken down to today. That 'weren't' no damn coincidence my friend. She's feeling guilty as hell right now, and she should. In fact, I'll go as far to say as that is one of the biggest admissions of guilt I've seen from the slathering drooling pigs in a long time.

I hope she's sweating bullets tonight. I hope her fucking boney ass is scared shitless about the storm that she unleashed.
