6. Aw... so sorry to hear that! She was a great gal, really humanized the whole First Lady thing.
She was the kind of person you felt like you could go have - well maybe not a beer - but coffee with. She was married to a Republican, but I still thought she was damn cool, and totally genuine. No idea how many lives she would up saving by going public with her struggles against breast cancer and alcoholism. She really brought both those things into the front lines, got them attention, demystified and dispelled the taboo and shame aspects of both back then, and raised an awful lot of awareness. Probably several million women were motivated to get mammograms because of her. She put a human face on the concept of "down-to-earth." I loved Betty Ford. Thought she was terrific. May she rest in peace.

7. Sad news, she was a special First Lady. It must have been hard on her after President Ford passed
they are reunited now, R-I-P Betty & Jerry.

12. I knew what the Ford Clinic was before I knew it was started by her
When I found out it was because of her and her struggles...well, much more respect. Watching some of the coverage tonight, I'm learning so much more about an extraordinary woman. Supported Roe v Wade and women's issues as a whole.
RIP Mrs. Ford. You changed lives.

15. I'm not about to blame Mrs. Ford for her husband's mistakes.
Though I have to admit I've wondered if she knew any of what he knew (re. Warren Commission coverup) and that led to her substance abuse problems. Or breast cancer, for that matter, since stress is often a factor when cancer develops.

But for the awareness she brought to those two issues, she definitely deserves recognition.

Rest in Peace, Betty :(

for a Republican to be pro choice and pro-ERA.
