What could be so wrong that this is what you'll do ...........
A man walked into the bathroom of the emergency room of my local hospital, killed himself with a shot to his head. I won't go into the hand gun issue(s). What I do know is that this community is made up of professionals, it encompasses 2 great school districts and there are plenty of mental health agencies as well as an excellent psychiatric hospital.

What went wrong?

1. Plenty could go wrong. Unless you know his full story it is kind of hard to say.

I don't advocate suicide, but he may have thought (obviously) that whatever problems he had that he could not go to anybody about it.

Sad. My Wife and I have both known people who have checked out. It leaves a big hole to friends and family.

Why a hospital. Was he staff?

3. Ummmm......
Many people can't get or afford insurance coverage for their physical illness and diseases. If they can, coverage for mental and emotional disorders or depression is often severely limited. And a medical diagnosis of such condition can limit one's options in life. Never mind the stigma that is often attached. Often those who are diagnosed either cannot afford treatment or are resistant to treatment.

I know three people who completed suicide last year. An elderly couple who I believe were in ill health and wanted to be together forever. A young father who was isolated and in the midst of domestic turmoil involving an unfaithful wife - and who likely had an unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated mental illness.

6. No group of people are exempt from the pressure we are under today.
Perfectly normal people can finally snap without warning. He may have had it under control until some little thing suddenly triggered this action.

One of my first historical memories in about 1950 was a farmer near us who was just an ordinary farmer doing okay as far as any of us could tell. He lined his house with explosives and killed himself and his whole family. No one in the community had any warning that something was wrong. He just snapped. In those days small farmers were being rapidly replaced by big modern farms. My guess is that was what happened to him but no one knows.

7. He didn't have insurance? A job? Dignity? Possibilities?
There's a lot of support systems in this country but the majority of its citizens are kept out by the velvet rope.
