Breaking: .....Papers, Please: Senate President Pearce Has Been Recalled!

"Mark down July 8th as a day history was made in Arizona.

In a swift affirmation of Arizona’s fast growing and powerful new political movement, Secretary of State Ken Bennett notified Gov. Jan Brewer that the once seemingly invincible architect of the state’s controversial SB 1070 “papers please” immigration law has officially been recalled. Bennett confirmed that the recall petitions delivered by the Citizens for a Better Arizona “exceeds the minimum signatures required by the Arizona Constitution.”

“Let’s make no mistake about it,” said Randy Parraz, co-founder of the Citizens for a Better Arizona. “Russell Pearce has been recalled.”

"According to Bennett’s statement, Pearce has two options: Resign from office within five business days, or become a candidate in the recall election. Either way, Pearce becomes the first state senate president in recent memory to be recalled in the nation."

8. My hope -
is that SB1070 is declared unconstitutional and the law will go away soon. I miss AZ - we would go to Phoenix International Raceway twice a year, but have not set foot in that State since SB1070.

38. Reason enough to be against 1070...
it was written, not by lawmakers, but the Corrections Corporation of America, a publicly traded billion-dollar company that imprisons people for profit, helped draft SB 1070 because "immigrant detention is their next big market."

Lots of people in jail for not carrying papers = big profit. At least it wasn't as bad as the first draft, when they would get 6 months in jail for not carrying the papers.

26. And if he does? The Kochs waded into a forest fire with bags of money
to put out the blaze. They bankroll everyone with a like agenda. They host "big" pow-wows. So they get their guys elected, and a brush fire breaks out. Pour some more money on it. And another brush fire. Pour some more money on it. And another. More money...that's the answer.

What have they bought? A family name that is the punchline to a bad joke.

A change of tactics is likely impossible for them, because they are THE KOCHS. Solution, pour some more money on the problem.

Meanwhile, their arrogance, elitism and greed is bringing them a backlash.

Now, it is getting interesting.

The Kochs can spend to defeat the Constitution and democracy until they are blue in the face. When americans have been pushed back enough by bastards, americans fight back hard, that is what we are as a people. The Kochs just as well wipe their asses with their money and flush it.

When you find yourself talking politics with your neighbor, or the person in front of you in line, GO LOCAL!!!! You're much more likely to find an unexpected ally :)

19. Every year.
This is how political wars are won, and this is where our individual powers are their strongest.

All politics are local. Don't neglect your local school board and city council/county commissioners, either. These are minor seats of power too often overlooked by Democrats, but they were instrumental in the Republican's plans to cement power in certain states.

21. Yes!!!
Local is not as sexy as national, since they get on tv, but it's where the true power lies!!

It's also easier to run for office as a non-two-party candidate on a local level, and it's the school boards, zoning commissions, and city/county supervisors where the REAL power lies!!!

28. And that's how you build a farm team of candidates that start at the low, local positions
and then move up. That's how that damnable ralph reed and his "Christian" Coalition built his power base. He exhorted everybody willing to listen to start out small. Run for school board! Run for local this-or-that. Then you win in one of those little-known and not-much-cared-about seats that don't seem like much, BUT can be springboards that lead you upward to bigger and better things.

87. Exactly.
I am a moderate. But even I feel that if progressives want a team that they can be proud of, they must build it locally that keep pushing it all the way to stints in the White House, House and Senate leadership and the Supreme Court. Time to stop hoping for Messiahs and send forth people that you have looked in the eye and whose heart you have had time to understand.

27. Other news agencies such as Reuters are saying that he faces a recall election.
I thought that "recalled" means that you have lost the recall election and have been removed from office as happened to Grey Davis. Pearce has already said that he will fight this so don't expect him to resign. Gathering enough signatures to force a recall election is a significant step, but it's a far cry from wining the recall election and forcing him from office. I don't think that the ultimate outcome of this case is at all certain at this point.

84. It does.
But sticking to conventional definitions can be so confining and produce such an accurate reflection of reality that, well, it's best to let the definitions be flexible and vary according to the moment.

Personally, I think the article overreaches and confuses "hope" in the future with "can" in the past.

92. There is a fine line between defeatism and realism. He is in a very conservative district.
And any number of candidates can file to run in that election. The winner will be the one with a plurality of votes. A majority of votes is not needed and there will be no runoff. So the anti-Pierce votes may well be divided up among several candidates. Realistically, I would rate Pierce as a heavy favorite to survive. And if I believe that to be the case, why not say so? What am I going to accomplish by wearing rose colored glasses only to be disappointed later?

90. But. At the best for the fucker, he will have to defeat at least one candidate.
Given the evil spirit of the man, forcing his ass to ask for votes is a victory. If Arizonans have gotten hammered by the racial cleansing laws that asshole got passed, and it appears the state has, even many people in his district that would vote for him in the past possibly could hesitate to do so to keep him in office.

70. There are unbelievably cool people in AZ
as there are in every state--we all just need to organize just like this to keep this country sane.

72. I live in his district
I signed one of the recall petitions floating around, not the other one, either way it seems to be good enough. Can't wait to vote but I'll doubt he'll lose considering the district he represents.

79. With any luck we can get a third party candidate
like a Neo-Nazi candidate for instance. That could well siphon off enough republiklan votes.

91. That demand should be made of him. He must produce his handwritten, long form
original birth certificate, and produce notarized accounts by two witnesses that saw him born to get on the ballot to save his seat. Burn the bastard with his own evil.
