Question came up in a chat room this morning. It is this: Marcus Bachmann runs clinic to cure the Gay, why is he getting Federal money for his clinic, since when was being gay a recognized illness?
This may be nothing, but it sounds real hinky to me

1. Is he getting money to run the clinic or is this money coming in |
|
payments for services to individuals. There's a huge difference, when it comes to what can be done about it, and how to do it. The man is the scum of the earth, but fighting him will depend on how that money is coming to him.

3. If his clinic is being used to cure Gays |
|
But abortions may be done in some Planned Parenthood but not all, but we must close them all down. - GOP
His clinic is used to "Cure the Gay", "The Cure" religious in nature, why are we subidizing this service? Being Gay isn't an illness. This is a legitimate question.

7. I agree that it is not an illness, and that no federal money should |
|
be going to him. I'm asking the question, because it makes a difference in how to deal with the situation and where to start to get it stopped.
If he is receiving some kind of direct grant to operate this "clinic," then that's one thing and it's very easy to attack. If he's receiving payment from something like medicaid for specific services to individual clients, then it's a different matter, and will be very difficult to attack without enlisting some of those patients in the process.
Don't misunderstand me. I'd love to find a way to shut this asshole down. But how to do it depends on where the money's coming from and for what.

14. I understand that, but if we're going to fight this, we need those |
|
details. I simply don't know the answer to the question, so I have no idea where to direct any efforts. The two possibilities present completely different approached that are needed. Where is this federal money coming from that's going to this "clinic?" The source determines the action that is needed.

5. There are several ex-gay orgs that receive Fed $$$ |
|
under the Faith based thing, which Obama supports. Obama seems pretty big on the ex-gay scene.

10. What are the organizations? Do you have a list of them? |
|
We need to fight this, but we need a list of organizations that are getting direct federal funds on a faith-based program and doing this "therapy." Do you have a link or something I can go to?

13. Apparently it was in the DSM as mental illness until 1974 |
|
No, I didn't know that. Your post made me curious, so I looked it up. http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/facts_mental_health.htmlUnder what grant/reason is he sucking away tax dollars? This is BEYOND wrong.

16. If he is collecting federal funds for improper services, then |
|
that can be fought quite easily. As you say, there is no illness, so there's no reason to pay for "treatment." More information is needed on where this money is coming from, exactly. What government program is paying him? If we can find that out, efforts can begin to stop that.

I feel as strongly about defunding the wars as I do about government giving money to religious organizations.
