19 Different Polls Show That Americans Support Tax Increases To Cut Deficit

19 Different Polls Show That Americans Support Tax Increases To Cut Deficit

By Jason Easley

Despite what the GOP keeps telling us, Bruce Bartlett has compiled a list of 19 different polls taken since January that demonstrate that Americans support increasing taxes in order to reduce the deficit and inequality. Americans may not love tax increases, but they understand their necessity for deficit reduction.

In the June 9 ABC News poll 61% of Americans believe higher taxes will be necessary to reduce the deficit, and 57% of those polled said that deficit reduction should include both tax increases and spending cuts.

A Pew poll found that more people blame the nation’s involvement in wars than tax cuts or spending for the deficit. The poll also found wide support for increasing taxes, as 67% said the more high earners income should be subject to being taxed for Social Security, and 66% support raising taxes on incomes over $250,000, and 62% support closing corporate tax loopholes.

A Bloomberg poll taken in May found that only 33% of those surveyed thought that it would be possible to lower the deficit without raising taxes, 64% expressed the belief that it isn’t possible to lower the deficit without raising taxes.

An April CBS News/NY Times poll showed that 72% of people favored raising taxes on the wealthy in order to reduce the deficit. A March NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 81% of those surveyed would support a tax on millionaires that would be used for deficit reduction, and 68% supported eliminating the Bush tax cuts on those who make over $250,000.

1 more time so even Pres. Obama can understand it - The American People don't want Cuts to Social Security and Medicaid.

They want the Wealthy and Greedy Corporations to pay their Fair Share

3. I think he is to an extent
Pelosi indicated "Raising the Cap on Social Security was on the table but her concern was what was going to happen to the surplus"

I am sure RATpubliCONs would love to apply any surplus towards financing additional Tax Cuts for Corps

4. Not just Obama, Peggy -- the Reps are reading the same
polls. I'm honestly flummoxed at why they're not ALL jumping on that bandwagon!

5. He's been pushing for tax hikes on the rich and ending corporate loopholes.
One of the things I saw him hit pretty hard was the ridiculousness of giving tax breaks on Corporate Jets.

I do not see anywhere that he is saying he wants to cut social security and medicare benefits. He has indicated he wants to reduce overhead w/o affecting beneficiaries.

8. Agree and agree, but as usual, the Republicans are more
on-target and cohesive in their messaging. They excel at the art of the sound bite. The Dems are all over the place. :(

11. But how many times did you hear that? When the Republicans
glomp on to something (job-killing Obama Care, for example) they manage to insert it whenever a microphone is in their face, regardless of the topic.

We don't. We've got great arguments and some great "lines" (which are true!) but they disappear. We need to say the bite again and again and again. That's what the people hear and remember, we're the only ones listening to the whole shebang. IMO, natch, :7

2. This makes the apologist whine of...
"Obama wants to be president for ALL Americans not just liberals!!!" line total bullshit. If he truly wants to represent the majority of Americans there are any number of policies he could support and any number of things he can do to accomadate the will of the people.

But he's choosing the fringe over the majority.

and ending a bunch of stupid breaks/loopholes in corporate taxes. He says it every time I see him on TV.

18. That has been Pres Obama's position for a long time
President Obama has been critical of so-called tax loopholes because, he maintains, they unfairly reward some industries—such as the oil and gas industry—and incentivize others to expand overseas rather than domestically. Despite this well stated position, the president's recently released FY 2012 budget shows that, like most people, he believes there are good tax expenditures and bad tax expenditures, and one's opinion and priorities determine which is which.

13. On those 3 issues the GOP propaganda machine was in full force
I don't see that surrounding the issue of Social Security or Medicaid cuts

Rather I see Healthcare providers running commercials objecting to any cuts in payments and RATpubliCONs ranting "Take Away Obama's Blank Check"

Make of that what you will

16. What blank check are they talking about?
God, how hateful are these people.

The frame that cutting into these two programs and not the bloated military budget will solve the deficit is propaganda. I read somewhere yesterday that the Pentagon can't even account for a quarter of the funds they get.

25. As promised ...
Forest Laboratories Inc., maker of the antidepressant Lexapro, does as well, Bloomberg News reported in May. The New York-based drug manufacturer claims that most of its profits are earned overseas even though its sales are almost entirely in the U.S.

China's 20% Tariff on American made goods entering China compared to America's 2% Tariff on Chinese goods entering America doesn't hurt American workers

Is that too complex?

24. well yes - sort of
don't need to start a trade war by unilateral action - but I do believe it appropriate to put all of our trading partners on notice America will be lowering our Trade Imbalance and looking specifically into unfair conditions

The fact we agreed to China's 20% tariff over China's claim "They were an emerging 3rd World Country" simply doesn't apply any more now that China is the #2 exporting country in the world and enjoys the highest positive trade imbalance in the world. Additionally China's Tax Policies ensure the foreign consumer pays the Majority of China's Tax Revenue - those conditions are unacceptable to the American Workers

21. Another poll shows the same results
Here in Minnesota our newly elected and current governor campaigned on taxing the wealthiest two percent of the population their fair share. He won the election. However, for whatever the reasons, the dems lost control of the legislture. Therefore we are currently in a state government shutdown because the pubs, of course, refuse to act in accordance to what the public wants and voted for. Also, and this is nothing new, the pubs here in Minnesota are lying through their teeth and there are far too many Minnesotans who are hung up on the w branded "tough guy patriot" mentatlity to realize or accept the fact that they are being willfully lied to by the warpiglicans. Their w brand is deep and obviously very painful to them so they ignore logic and reason because it opens up their w brand wound. A lot of these idiots are at facebook and they refuse to listen to anything that could and would burst their bubbles. I'd like to over run facebook with people who are in the know and blst their ignorance out of the water, so to speak. Anyone got any ideas?

ALL the poles show the same results

the 60-78% results just demonstrate the pollster's accuracy - and I believe the 78% to be the accurate assessment
