Portrait of a freeper about to be "zotted"

Slaves were treated as cattle in the old South.

When it was advantageous to the owner he would allow families to stay together. When not, he would split them for whatever reason. It's the basis of innumerable Blues songs from the old days.

However, that Bachmann would sign a pledge with such statements shows she is as stupid as she appears. And, oblivious.

That said, there are at least 5 million that will vote for her on the basis of this pledge alone

"When the Irish first came to the U.S. (famine), they were treated worse than the slaves. Strange that no one talks about it much."

BS!!!!!!!!!

The Irish had freedom of association and every freedom you enjoy today.

They were free to move out of the cities and settle land in order to enjoy the fruits of their labors and LIBERTY.

5. Bachmann is smarter
They are both raving batshit bull-goose insane, but Bachmann is smarter. Palin is just a self-promoting grifter and is as dumb as a sack of hammers. Bachmann has just enough brains to be far more dangerous than Mooselini.

3. I always love that the Irish were treated worse than the slaves.
When were the Irish ever anywhere treated under the law as property?

Human beings as legal property is something no one talks about much.

7. Indentured servitude is alive and well, as a matter of fact
One of its current incarnations is in the form of legally inescapable student loan debt, for instance.

12. Of course I've heard of indentured servitude. I'm a retired enlisted.
However, even with indefinite and six, my contract could be fulfilled and I could leave. What slave had that prospect?

11. Depends on Your POV
Blacks were property.

Property has no freedom and is often abused.

But of course one protects property. One will at least feed property if it requires it.

The Irish were not property. They were free.

They were as free to root in the garbage for food because no one would hire them and free to run from mobs driving them out of town just like anybody else.

I really hate when people try to compare one group's persecution with another, as if it was some kind of contest.

Who's persecution has more weight? Who's misfortune is more unfortunate?

What different does it make? Injustice where it is found should be righted.

But pissing contests are fun, I guess.

14. And what Chief Justice ever said that an Irishman had no rights that
(fill in the blank) should honor. What Irishman or woman was sold as property or had their children sold as property?

If you believe property is protected and cared for, recommend a visit to an animal shelter.

19. In Ireland they were bound to the land, and the landlord controlled their lives.
Until there were too many mouths to feed and no longer needed them, then used any reason to transport them overseas to penal colonies.

Then the Famine came, and the those that could came to America, where they were free men.

17. The Irish were sold by Cromwell
tofireland.com/IrishSlaves.htm

Flogging Molly has a song about this

I grew up in Delaware and the DuPonts were know for their horrible treatment of the Irish. They used them in the powder mills where they were blown up on a regular basis. No problem, replace them with more. They were brought to Delaware on a seven year indentured servant plan but lived on company property and owed their live to the company store. Many could never make enough to pay off their debt. The beautiful stone houses, fences, fireplaces were build by Irish masons. The firefighters, police and other jobs that no one else wanted were filled by the Irish and that is why you still see generations of Irish in those jobs.
Funny story, Elise Dupont owns the WaWa chain of grocery stores and she had so much trouble finding workers years ago that she hired Irish....

Anyway, this country has a history of treating people bad. Bachmann is just carrying on a bad tradition. Bat shit crazy.

Jesus Christ. If that is not a desperate plea for some REMEDIAL education on what this country is and has been about then I don't know what is.

Good God. I can't believe there are people who truly believe this.

That's because it's accurate. Conservatives are big on the truth.

18. That's racist crap of course
So this is off topic. In the 18th and 19th centuries the contracts of indentured service laborers could be sold. In a way indentured servitude resembled slavery.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.charles/2899.2/mb.ashx

In some of my studies in New Orleans I'd learned quite a bit on the subject from examining old records and documents. For instance before the Civil War the prices of good slaves with high skills could cost up to $1,200. Average -such as a strong field hand- was around $700. When the original West End Canal was constructed between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain Irish laborers were hired because they were cheaper.Slaveowners didn't want to risk the lives and health of their more valuable assets. Ther was a huge stone Celtic cross erected on the site where they had buried thousands of Irish workers who died of 'yellow jack'. I'm not making any political point, just mentioning a tidbit from history.

One of my dear friend's father was the son of Norwegian indentured workers. Both parents had their passage to America paid for by going into contracted labor. Apparently this was very common around 1900. Of course this is not equivalent to the slave trade. But something like it is still going on.
