Support the President!
Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made. - Otto von Bismarck

One of the pitfalls of following politics is that you see things that ordinary Americans would rather not look at. Obama's offer to put Social Security on the negotiating table is at best a feint. He's fully aware that it's really not negotiable at all.

With all the criticism of the president these days, I find myself starting to dig in. I voted for Obama and I continue to support him. He took a difficult job because he is a great American. However, I'm aware that a visit to the sausage factory is enough to make you not want to eat sausage. Nonetheless I support the president even when I don't completely understand his motivations. I trust President Obama.

Steadfast and true

2. I do! I reserver the right to whine and complain, but bottom
line is I trust him, too. Although I'm not as confident as you that this is a feint -- he may sincerely believe it's do-able without doing TOO much harm. But I don't know either way for sure. I DO believe if he does tinker with SS/Medicaid/Medicare it would be political suicide. Bush's ratings plummeted when he started pushing privatizing SS (but not as a result of all the rest of the despicable things he did!).

You are so right about the majority of Americans not being aware of much of the stuff we are.

I think he's a GOOD person, and don't agree with those who think he's sold out or doesn't give a damn.

At worst it's complicity..

I had someone I loved with all my heart and trusted absolutely stab me in the back in a really foul manner a few years ago, I'm never trusting anyone completely again, particularly a politician.

I do hope you regain your ability to trust, because it must be lonely having to keep an eye on people because you don't trust anyone. I mean that sincerely.

I like Obama. There's something about him that makes me believe he won't betray us. I'd rather be naive than whatever is its opposite.

Should we trust Obama based upon his words, his promises, or his actions?

Do we support our president right or wrong (that has such a Republican ring to it)?

Yeah, there is digging going on because a lot of us feel like we are being buried.

I don't recall offering permission or saying such was necessary. I kind of was saying do your own thing based on what your eyes see. I'm glad you can make the leap of faith to support him still, I just can't after the discontinuity in words and actions.

32. No leap of faith for me
Odd that you would characterize supporting this president as a "leap of faith." I guess I'm not supposed to see the passive aggressive stuff you're tossing around right now.

If you choose not to support him, that's your choice. I genuinely could not care less. I read alot every single day and have a different opinion.

33. The topic was trust not support.
Huge difference. If it comes down to it and he is the Democratic candidate I would support him over any Republican.

Your reading passive aggressive motives into something that wasn't there. I was saying I have had my trust in him shattered by the broken promises. But if you are making your opinion of him in spite of those then that was the 'leap of faith', but still that is in line with my original premise to not let fools like me influence your opinion, just use your own eyes and ears.

38. Oh, you are right about the topic of this thread. My bad.
I responded back from the 'My DU' post and got them mixed up. But I did not think I was arguing with you. I started by saying you shouldn't let anyone's opinion effect your opinion, as in digging in with your support because someone else disagrees with you. Just saying don't let people push those buttons and create the opinions from yourself. That's all, eyes, ears, follow your heart.

17. I trust him completely.
This president has to maneuver at many different levels. As the first AA president he has to deal with things no president ever has. The racists who oppose him for no other reason than his race. The corporate media that is stronger than ever, a far right supreme court. An out of touch and corrupt congress that is only focused on their own self interests and could give a rat's ass about this country. Some likened him to Jackie Robinson; he cannot come off as the "angry black man". Like it or not, he has to be acceptable to mainstream America. What would have happened if on day one he started implementing a wish list of progressive policies? He would have been crucified. He has had to do much from behind the scenes. Those who think he has a magic wand to wave are living in la-la land. He is playing the long game. I expect him to shift left in his second term.

I don't think Obama's going to be the Head Lemming. Sounds to me like he's proposing that Republicans charge into the sea, hinting that he'll lead them. But I seriously doubt that this is more than a head feint.

Do I agree with all of the compromise he gives to the republicans? No, but I feel he is a strong and worthy leader. What President Obama needs is MORE support, not less. He is trying to bring about sustained change against a group of people who would gladly see him destroyed.

What we need to do is get off the couch and get out the vote. Put more progressives in office in 2012. The republicans did it in 2010 - we have much larger numbers, why can't we do it in 2012?

Scialia and Kennedy might resign between 2012-2016 and that gives the liberal left two supreme court nominees. That is enough to dump Citizens United and the elections can go back to being normal.

Obama must win and no matter what the cost because we can replace Sciala and Kennedy.
