It’s no secret that Republican politicians serve Corporate interests. They wish to get re-elected and need campaign funds to do so. Their primary source of campaign funds come from Corporations, so they serve Corporate interests to keep those funds flowing. Corporations would love to privatize all Government services because there is a lot of money to be made providing those services.
Simply look at the Support services that our military outsourced to private companies in Iraq and Afghanistan under Bush. Remember Halliburton charging the Pentagon for transporting empty tankers and calling it “sailboat fuel”? What about the Blackwater mercenaries making over $100k annually whose actions were so disgraceful that Blackwater was forced to change it’s name?
This is what is really behind the “cut government spending” meme. There is still a need (market) for those services, and if the government can’t or won’t provide them then private companies will step in. Since private companies require a profit, the end result is that taxpayers will pay more for these services than they would pay in taxes. It also means that many people won’t be able to afford those services, but that doesn’t matter to Corporation profit motives.
One of the reasons that Reagan is so revered by Republican politicians is that by driving up the deficit so high, Congress was eventually forced to slash spending in order to bring the government debt under control.
As a short-run strategy to reduce inflation and lower nominal interest rates, the U.S. borrowed both domestically and abroad to cover the Federal budget deficits, raising the national debt from $997 billion to $2.85 trillion. This led to the U.S. moving from the world's largest international creditor to the world's largest debtor nation. Reagan described the new debt as the "greatest disappointment" of his presidency.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaganomics When Bush and the Republican Congress was in control, they purposely cut taxes and drove up the deficit in order to eventually reach the point where we are today, known as the “Starve the Beast” strategy. They increased deficits primarily in the form of earmarks for Republican districts in order to help their candidates get re-elected, so the excessive spending served two purposes. Remember the Bridge to Nowhere? Did you know that Alaska still received that funding, although it was simply no longer ear-marked for the bridge?
And so, here we are. But let’s not forget how we got here.
