It's certainly a possibility, I think most of us just disagree about how strong a possibility it is.

The Karmic Earthquake, to put it mildly, should be entertaining.

2. Depends.
On what he does when he the ability to keep medicare and medicaid in his sights.
On what he does when Julian Assange is in US hands.

I don't disbelieve that he can do well. What I have some doubts of is what he will do.

15. "what he WILL do"
I see. There is nothing he can accomplish that will be sufficient. There will always be something he may (or may not) do in the future that will prevent you from accepting him. On permanent probation.

75% of the complaints about Obama on this board are lodged with respect to something he may do in the future.

"what he does when Julian Assange is in US hands": I almost coughed up an entire cup of tea laughing on that one.

21. There really aren't that many places on the internet that are even as sane as DU..
Not for politics, the whackjobs, both conservative and just plain flying mammal guano types dominate just about everywhere.

Obama has given plenty of reasons not to fully trust him.

If what we believe is going to happen comes to pass, it's going to be horrible, in so many ways. I'd much rather be wrong.

The tastiest crow is usually served in DC.

But, unfortunately, it's downright impossible to get decent crow these days.

14. What's it going to be like if the game is checkers and he loses?
Bet there won't be many who admit it though. Somehow, whatever comes out of the "game" will be declared a victory. republican politicians and Democratic politicians will both pat themselves on the back, strut before the cameras, and announce their "win".

Meanwhile the people I work with at the center will still be out of work, still be without medical care, and still be trying to feed their family. They'll just be doing it without the "fair share" that they will kick in for the "win".

Sorry if this seems like a downer to you. But this is what will happen. This is what these beautiful people have to deal with. Despair and lost dignity is what they get when rich politicians win.

40. Neither was my first paragraph.
On DU, neither side will admit error. On DU, no matter what crap the world has to suffer because of the "deal" the centrists will claim victory. DU is in exactly the same state as the rest of the country. Polarized with little introspection or reflection. The party has split and DU just reflects that. You have the old time, wild-eyed, activist liberals and the new party centrists. That is the bulk of the Democratic party right now. Both claim to be the heart of the party. But we are split. What the old guard will see as capitulation and caving will be hailed as brilliant strategy by the new third-way Democrats.

So no. Unless the deal that passes calls for an end to corporate well-fare, an end to the bush tax cuts, and a return to a progressive tax policy there won't be any whip-lash. Just the slow shaking of the head from side to side.

Now. I would be joyous in my sore neck if it meant that a substantive progressive deal passes. My mea culpas will be effusive.

My question goes the other way. Will there be a whiplash of insight if the president caves by making a deal that limits SS and Medicare by cutting those funds and gets only a slight cut in yacht taxes or a small reduction in corporate entitlements? How bad does the deal have to be before the ever faithful begin to question?

43. Good question..
It would be interesting if someone were to make an OP of it, this one wasn't very popular so I'm not inclined to throw yet another brilliant thought brain fart into the abyss that is DU.

18. I would be more than satisfied if I were sure that Obama was adept at playing regular chess.
This multiple D chess playing is just so much bullshit.

Cynicism is part of being a Democrat. It's bad enough when you get screwed over by Republicans because that is what they do. It's hard to take when you get betrayed by your own party.

Apparently no cherished Democratic Party ideals or values are too important not to be compromised or bargained away.

41. Chess to win what? I'm seeing no payoff worth the gamble and little that will be worth
whatever candy he passes out in his standard mode of operation.

No matter what the outcome, he has given credibility to the underlying TeaPubliKlan position. There is no "winning" from there whatever dimension of chess is played. We know the TeaPubliKlans are intransigent ideologues and history is stacked high with evidence of such including their own proud proclamations.

What "chess" is there to be played here and what is there to "win"?
