Walmart Books
I don't go to Walmart much, but yesterday I accompanied some other people, and while I waited, I wandered over to the book section. Very small selection, but they included books by Beck, Coulter, lots religious-oriented books. Books about that kid who supposedly went to heaven and came back.
People who shop at Walmart don't stand a chance.
Even their books selection is skewed.

2. All of the books and music
Edited on Sun Jul-10-11 06:19 AM by MrsBrady
are supplied to Walmart by a company called Anderson Merchandisers, home office based in Amarillo, TX.
(The reason it's in Amarillo, is that the guy who started the company, who's name is escaping me at the moment, is from Amarillo.
That's also why Hasting's Books and Music (a retailer) is based in Amarillo, as it was spun off and sold by Anderson years ago.)

I don't know if they still get ALL (I'd assume they do, though) of their books and music from them now, as I have not worked in this capacity for over 10 years, but I used to
work for a major music label (one of the big ones), and I worked for an executive that dealt with the "Anderson Account" all the time.

Anderson is Walmart's bitch. The companies that supply books and music to Anderson are "vendor managed".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor-managed_inventory

And they have the power to make or break artists and authors.
Walmart/Anderson control a big portion of the book and music industry.

6. It's not just Wally-World...
Meijer, the other big retailer in town here, stocks books by Beck, Coulter, ad nauseum. I think it's a matter of stocking what sells locally. Did you notice if that Wally-World had a large selection of Amish "romance novels"? The one here does.

14. "Amish Romance Novels"?
"Goody's breath caught as she saw the hat of the man she had been promised since her birth. Shamelessly, she let a lock of her hair fall from beneath her bonnet and reached up to replace it flaunting her smooth luxurious ankles in the process."

17. Is it just me, or does the plot of many romance novels boarder on rape?
Edited on Sun Jul-10-11 04:00 PM by Odin2005
I wonder how much of a role these trashy romance novels have in women accepting the misogyny and rape-apologism in our society.

And those bodices were not all ripped with the full consent of their owners.

7. i look at walmart book section often and for years. i dont find that to be the case at all
they sell at 5.99 while the grocery store is at 6.99 and bookstores at 7.99. so walmart is the best price. they sell the top that comes out, whatever that may be. and there will be rw books and christian books along with every other new release.

your post is off the mark

27. What does dependency on government and taxpayers have to do with the conversation?
Edited on Sun Jul-10-11 08:05 PM by LiberalAndProud
If you buy a book at your local independent reseller, you'll be forced to be a welfare recipient? I suppose you could make use of your public library if things get really tight, huh? Or is that too dependent for your taste?

The previous poster was out of line, but all of a sudden you sound like an anti-Dem, and that isn't like you, emilyg.

38. You know what encourages dependency on benefits? Shopping at WalMart.
They refuse to pay their employees well enough to keep them off of the dole. Every artificially cheap item you buy there is kept affordable for you by taxpayer subsidies to impoverished WalMart employees.

ETA -- I don't drop "b" bombs around here any more whatsoever and haven't since you got what I felt was a rather innocuous post of mine deleted. Maybe you should quit rubbing the fact that you think Wal-Mart is the best thing since dirt in the faces of MANY people on this board who are justifiably against the company and everything it stands for.

Maybe next time you go by there, you could see if they sell STFU in gallon jugs next to the milk. :)

Between the avatar and the dominance of that sort of thing in the book selection at WalMart, I'm guessing I'm onto something? Unless you're into NASCAR-themed romance novels*, which WalMart also carries.

I've looked in the book section at WalMart. It's pretty much all Chicken Soup for the Soul crap and romance novels, with the occasional parenting book or tacky country crafts manual.

45. Which is why you're posting about it on the internet?
You said their book selection wasn't as depicted and that you buy all of your books there, but you'll only claim one book you bought there. And then you played the "at least I'm not on welfare" card out of nowhere when people asked you to follow through on what you posted. It's not our fault if you're not posting in good faith and willing to back up your assertions.

I respect that not everyone has choice, but if you do have choice, your way seems to be the best way (Wal-Mart: Just Say No).

Honestly, I have plenty of choices in my town and I did go to Wal-Mart to comparison shop and their prices didn't exactly impress me as being all that great anyhow.

15. I guess I was a bit too adamant.
I understand that some towns really don't offer much alternative, but we do have alternatives here, which is why I won't give Wal-Mart any of my business. Our midtown store here is expanding into something gargantuan -- I think I read somewhere that it will be one of the largest Wal-Marts in the country, since they're adding on all the groceries, tires, etc. etc. I just won't have anything to do with their continuing attempts to put everyone else out of business.

And with regard to the prices, my husband just bought a halibut rod at our local Fred Meyer and just for giggles after he bought it went into Wal-Mart to compare prices. The exact same rod in Wal-Mart cost over $30 more. Some bargain...

We've actually found the best prices for produce and some other things here are at a couple of our locally owned Asian grocers. And, of course, there's lots of cool stuff there that you can't even buy in the chains.
