CBS doing a morning retrospective on Betty Ford. |
|
They're reminding me why I always admired her.
Pro choice
Pro ERA (who even remembers that, anymore?)
Her refreshing plain spokenness.
Her frankness.
Her honesty.
Her humanity.
Her husband was a decent guy who was misguided. She was the one who steered the better course.

1. Rating First Ladies, Betty Ford was among the best and most inspirational. |
|
Not an ornament of the POTUS.
Nancy Reagan was a stark contrast to Betty Ford, more like a combination of Maribel Morgan (The Total Woman), a Hollywood Hostess, and a arriviste at an established country club.
Betty Ford bridged the generation gap as well. She was my mother's generation yet she seemed so cool and aware of what I thought was important as far as social issues. I cheered during her "60 Minutes" interview when she stated that she wouldn't be surprised if her teen daughter, Susan, was "having an affair" (i.e., premarital sex, not extramarital).

2. She's the first GOP First Lady I really remember and she seemed |
|
so authentic, just like everyday women of that time. She would be muzzled by the GOP today, of course.
RIP Mrs. Ford.
