An assessment of the Budget Cap related cuts |
|
The Republicans wanted a Trillion dollars in budget cuts, almost all in programs supported by Democrats. Knowing they don't have control of the Senate one might imagine that they expected to see half of their wish to be granted through negotiation. They began by asking for $2 Trillion in cuts but through a stroke of standard negotiating techniques they asked for more going knowing that in the end their demands would be cut down to size. So for two or three weeks they put on their nasty face and demanded $4 Trillion in cuts. To add to the tactic they floated plenty of rumors that they had to have Social Security and the health programs cut too. And three quarters of the nation flew into a righteous uproar - as well they should. So now with little time go go to write legislation and get it through the voting process before the checks start to bounce the Republicans cave. They drop their demands down to what now seems a quite reasonable $2 Trillion in cuts - twice what they thought they would get in the first place. And we Democrats, just days ago in an uproar over the $4 Trillion in desired cuts will be glad that we were able to save the world's economy with just $2 Trillion in cuts.
Looks to me like they done good.
