I had a really bizarre dream last night - the ERA Movement picked up steam
And this time, all across the country, the signatures were there. Congressmen were being forced into supporting it. The President was angrily trying to prevent it, but to no avail.

Talking heads all over the country were talking about it - the Equal Rights Amendment. A bit of unfinished legislation was back on the discussion board again. Strangely enough, lawyers were arguing that this amendment could even be used to reverse the citizen's united ruling, as it would define personhood as human, thus denying corporate personhood.

Some Repubulicans were really for it, but a number of them were dead set against it. The religious right, especially, was against it. "How can we teach people to hate gays?" they asked. "What will happen to our daughters if they can go to the bathroom with MEN??? SOME OF THEM NEE-GROS????"

Lots of Democrats were for it, of course, but many weren't. They knew that this would mean the end of big checks from corporations. This meant they would have to abide by campaign finance laws. This meant they couldn't take the citizens for granted. This also meant an end to all the back-room deals that excluded specific constituents. This meant the cloak room discussions might just have to be on C-SPAN.

The youth was what was behind it this time. Several generations of kids, from the Gen-Xers to today, had been brought up believing "All people are created equal." It didn't matter that they weren't treated this way in reality - it was their job, their responsibility to see that they were. All civil rights acts in the past now had to be honored. Brown vs the Board of Education was just the starting point - and this was the civil rights movement's climax, a little later than expected, but welcomed nonetheless.

My dream didn't last long enough to see what happened eventually - but I guess that part is up to us...

1. Someone should name it "The Betty Ford ERA Amendment".
