Something just happened here close to Pismo Beach.
A loud blast and then very weird loud huffing sounds and then a big flash in the sky southwest of here towards Vandenburg AFB. If anyone knows what happened, please post. Maybe an airplane crash?

1. Once again, DU scoops the news organizations
I don't have a clue, but if it's on the air base, you might never know.

Unless people were killed, they'll hush it up.

5. It was scary. It frightened me and the cat.
I believe it lasted about two minutes but I wasn't timing.

8. Jeez - two minutes of something like that probably felt like
and eternity (I'm thinking of the earthquakes I've experienced).

 and  to the cat.

Stand by, if anybody will get the scoop, it'll be DU.

9. No. Where I am high on a hill, we watch and
listen to fireworks from several beach communities. They are loud. We know the loud, but this was terribly loud.

14. I hate to say this, but I hope nothing happened to the helicopters
and other aircraft they were flying. That could explain the bang and flame (is that what you said -- flame?) but don't know about the whoosh.

Are you close enough to hear something like that?

Here's hoping they're all safe.

One night in bed I was awakened by a shaking and a deep rumble -- nothing dramatic and I assumed it was just a quake. Next day I saw on the news they had tested an underwater something (I lived on Lake Washington right above NOAA) and they "didn't think it would bother the nearby residents" so they hadn't made an announcement. At least with this they've mentioned it beforehand, but really, it should be on all the local news shows. Just a couple of seconds -- if you see/hear this...

16. The thing is, if it's the AFB, I'm not that close, so
if it was that far away, it was a big bang. I do see the launches if weather permits and there is a rumble and lights and a contrail you can see, if weather permits. I'm thinking it was closer like an airplane crash or something like that.

12. Yes, and usually there is a contrail that
you can look at and a little mini-earthquake before that. I am so sorry this was different. I hope I'm wrong.

There seems to be no problem. They aren't interrupting for breaking news, yet the dogs around here haven't stopped barking.

at about 2am the news wasn't on so I called a local station and they confirmed there'd been a quake. This was before the internet. :7

18. No. Our local stations are owned by Big Business
and they just don't answer phones after hours. The only thing they do is emergency and they aren't doing it tonight, so maybe whatever happened is not an emergency as long as they are concerned. I still have electricity and internet so maybe it isn't awful.

If you're near Pismo Beach did you hear about that couple run over by a car last fall? I use to read her blog every day and it was so shocking when her daughter came on the blog that day and told everyone what happened.

24. Did what you hear sound like a sustained roar or series of on-and-off blasts?
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:16 AM by leveymg
If it sounded like a rocket launch, and there was an intense light like a missile launch but there was no rising contrail, it might have been a static ground test. Watch this video, go to 4:45, and tell us if that's what you heard.

26. No. I know the sustained roar.
This was a crash sound as if that had happened on a freeway, but very loud. Then I thought maybe there was a crash somewhere, but the the huffing sounds started after that for what seemed a long time, which especially frightened my cat. I was at my window trying to see if there were any fires and that's when I saw the huge flash of light. It was kind of like thunder and lightening but backwards.

28. Ok. Thud, hiss might be an aircraft crash followed by a fuel burn. It would burn for quite a while
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:27 AM by leveymg
though. You say there was a loud sustained "huffing sound", and then a short, intense flash of light?

Hard to say what that might be. You would see a rocket engine test a long way at night, and there would be a loud roaring, but that would follow the ignition. Maybe a rocket motor blew up in some spectacular fashion after a sustained burn.

29. That could be. Your scenario makes sense.
I don't know if we will ever know. I know what you say about the loud roaring. That is normal and what I'm familiar with when we are warned of blast offs. Perhaps there was a bad mistake. The dogs have stopped barking. I will watch the local news at eleven to see if they say anything. I doubt it. They are more into promoting local tourist agendas. The Prince and new Princess were the stories of today.

Doesn't sound like you're in any peril, so I'd pour myself a cool drink and put some soothing music on.

Let us know if you learn anything. Good night from the East Coast.

25. Can you call neighbors or other friends....
...in the area and ask them if they heard anything?

Are any people outside? When things like that happen, sometimes people tend to go outside--in part
to engage others in coversation and to try to find answers or support.

Anything on the local news?

All about the local festivals, the royals (Kate and William) and other nonsense that happened earlier. The only guy live is the weather guy.

It seems I'm a little nervous. I don't know what happened and probably will never.

34. Anything about Diablo Canyon? Its 5 times as close
Which I really hope is not the case.

Diablo Canyon nuclear waste becoming 'terrible burden'

Diablo Canyon Power Plant, like many other nuclear plants in the nation, is becoming its own mini Yucca Mountain -- a growing repository of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel.

For years, the identified solution was to bury the waste in a centralized underground storage facility at Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert. However, the Obama administration has canceled those plans.

This means that spent fuel stockpiles at places such as Diablo Canyon won't be going anywhere for the foreseeable future. This angers many local elected officials who feel betrayed by the federal government.
"This is a terrible burden that we weren't supposed to and shouldn't have to bear," said County Supervisor Adam Hill, whose district includes Diablo Canyon.

testing some new super secret plane?

Now it's morning and not a peep in the news. I think now that it was Vandenberg AFB doing a rocket launch, one of the secret ones they don't tell us about.

What is our military up to?
