HOW RICH ARE THE SUPERRICH?

A huge share of the nation's economic growth over the past 30 years has gone to the top one-hundredth of one percent, who now make an average of $27 million per household. The average income for the bottom 90 percent of us? $31,244.

WINNERS TAKE ALL

The superrich have grabbed the bulk of the past three decades' gains.

4. Raise taxes on the rich
Raise taxes on corporations as well and close the loopholes they use. Right now they're sitting on trillions of dollars in excess cash and they aren't doing anything with it.

Use the cash raised to create public works programs for the unemployed.

No more supply-side nonsense. That trickledown bullshit does NOT work.

2. about your note
the graph there seems to be about income and not wealth, and thus is not really affected by the housing crash.

Also, unfortunately, it seems to put the bottom 90% all in the same boat, which we are not. $31,244 a year would be a big step up for me, but be a big step down for my brother.

3. Of course statistics always need to be put into context.
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:36 AM by Hissyspit
Obviously there is a relationship between income and wealth, but even put into context, why do I not feel any better about the 11 graphs, anyway?

ON EDIT: I took their note out of the OP since I didn't mean to put it in there in the first place and I don't want it to distract people from clicking the link and reading the entire piece.

11. well I was not trying to make you feel better
just to be clear that the chart showed income distribution rather than wealth distribution. Sometimes people will cross the two up when talking about 'the rich'.

I just checked my own averages http://www.koch2congress.com/5.html

top 1% - over $388,806, average $1,320,289
next 4% - over $153,542, average $218,434
next 5% - over $108,904, average $127,532
next 15% - over $64,702, average $87,147
next 25% - over $30,563, average $46,265
bottom 50% - less than $30,563, average $14,979

I should perhaps modify that to include the top .1% and the Fab 400. But the threshhold to make the top 10% is $108,904. The 75-90% group makes an average of $87,147 and the bottom 50% makes an average of $14,979.

But my sources are IRS stats, which admittedly are skewed by having a number of teenagers and college students in the bottom 50% where they don't belong. My nieces may make $5 - 10,000 but they are not poor. They are part of their parents much wealthier household.
