KAMAISHI, Iwate--Four months after the Great East Japan Earthquake, about 18,000 people are still living at about 400 shelters in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun survey.

Enough temporary housing units for all evacuees who want to move into such accommodations are likely to be available by mid-August. However, many such units now stand empty in suburban areas, as evacuees do not want to live in units located far from hospitals and schools.

This could mean a prolonged stay at shelters for many disaster victims.

"I always feel sluggish, and I don't want to do anything," Tamiko Ogasawasa, 78, said Saturday. Ogasawasa is living in a public gym in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, where the highest temperature on Saturday was 36.4 C.
