Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 12:09 AM by Lex

Yes, the shooter may have been mentally ill but frankly, that is exactly who those persons who spew hate on the radio & tv hope to incite.

It's entirely foreseeable and they damn well know it.

Writing it all off as a crazy guy did a crazy thing is what the corporate-right wing media will do.

1. There are studies showing right wing beliefs are manifested as mental illness.

2. I would agree with you. Otherwise, why do these types of media
exist? Why would they say and I daresay, dream about, the things they give voice to if not to hope in one small part of their brain that someone will hear them and act?

3. Exactly.
They know exactly what they're doing. Anyone who denies it is either naive or a fool.

I think the rhetoric goes ever-closer to the edge in the never-ending push for higher ratings, and higher ratings = more $$$. If some lunatic grasps on to the words and they convince him to kill people then those individuals are simply collateral damage in the quest for higher ratings.

7. Some words/language/rhetoric have foreseeable consequences
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 12:39 AM by Lex
and just writing it off as the crazy actions of a "lunatic" does NOT in any way relieve those speaking of their responsibility (and if they merely want "higher ratings" that doesn't relieve them of responsibility either).

9. I didn't say it relieved people of responsibility
My only point is that the intent was most likely not for someone to actually take violent action against a political opponent. The intent was to enrich the speaker. However, If some innocent people get hurt or killed in the process...well, you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. I'm guessing those people aren't missing much sleep tonight. After all, they don't see it as their fault.

10. "you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet"
and if a few people get killed, then 'oh well?'

The right to free speech ends when incitement to violence occurs.

19. I don' think they see it as incitement to violence
But they are quick to be dismissive of people who tell them their language is a problem

8. K and R

AS I said earlier:

We need respect.

Decency means being decent. What has passed for "talk" has become a stream of hate all over the corporate media, an indecent forum where violence is encouraged and law and order are mocked.

It's time to call them on their reckless, bloodthirsty products.

12. The video with Whoopi explaining that the people telling others
(inciting the violence) are not doing it themselves and that if a person decides to commit those acts of violence, THEY will be the ones who go to jail, not the people who told them to do it. It was very prophetic and true. There is a video of The View around here somewhere where you can watch it, if you haven't seen it already.

16. I agree. Very odd associations being made by the Teabag crowd
between guns (targets, sights, etc.), and voting and politics. I don't think this is done to be cute. I think they're hoping that a wacko takes them seriously. And when he does, they'll distance themselves and call him crazy.

20. don't you think...
that if the shooter was a fan of reich wing talk radio/tv... he might have wrote something on his websites or mentioned something to a friend that reflected a RW talking point?

If his youtube video said "the tree of liberty..." or "white house defiled by the black..." or "Birth Certificate..." or "Take our country back..." or "liberty this, tyranny that..."

If we ever REALLY have a genuine RW terrorist he'll sound like a mix of Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Beck, Palin and Savage.

21. We don't know all of what "he might have wrote" at this point.
But we know what the Sheriff there said today. And we do know the shooter chose to shoot a Democratic Representative in the face point blank after inflammatory symbols and remarks and threats have been made against Rep. Giffords by right-wingers.

All the facts are not out yet, and more will be forthcoming.

22. then please explain this...
Giffords is a blue dog, strong on the border, guns and has a lot of Republican support in her district and she's a former Republican.

IF the shooter was sane and IF the shooter was an "assassin"...

Wouldn't he have targeted a truly "progressive politician" there in Southern Arizona?

Rep. Raul Grijalva represents basically the same area, the next district over. He's the son of a Mexican migrant worker, he's a member of MECHA, has received 100% scores from Americans for Democratic Action, Peace Action, the League of Conservation Voters, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and several other notable groups.

Grijalva has an "F" rating from the NRA, sponsored the 2007 Assault Weapons bill, supports a Public Health Option and supported the DREAM act.

So your theory is that this big, bad RW terrorist singled out the beautiful, sweet Blue Dog Dem, ex Republican woman with the Astronaut husband and the beautiful children? I don't buy it. He's an ANIMAL, plain and simple and he's sick. That's what the evidence will show, I'm 100% sure of it.
