I don't have access to TV right now. Real curious to know if CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and NBC are covering the demise of their colleagues. My general sense of the US print media is that they are treating this as a UK story.

If they are covering it, what is the spin or frame ?

1. MSNBC has been covering it quite a bit
Don't know about the others, though.

2. "treating this as a UK story"
Which it is.

I'm surprised at the way its being followed here on DU.

5. I think there is a significant US component to it. Murdoch is a US citizen
Other News Corp entities have been caught doing similar things here and it goes way back.

TWA Flight 800 which was shot down near JFK in 1996:
"A New York Post reporter was accidentally granted access to the hotel where families of victims were being housed. She remained with them, traveled to the memorial service and pretended to be family member herself for three days, filing reports for the Post."

fast-tracked by Rudy Giuliani ... so that the congress could fast-track legislation which allowed him so much media ownership in the U.S. ... previously not allowed (ownership by foreign entity) ...

3. don't know about the networks - but the NYT is not only covering... but breaking
some of the news. Yesterday NYT broke that police investigators had been targeted by NoTW ... and today breaks a new method used by NoTW (also illegal and requiring police payoffs and help) of pinging targets via gps and their mobile phones.

4. I witnessed CNN wallowing around in it a few days ago.
The longer it takes for the story to develop, the more coverage it will get I assume. Pretty hard to keep ignoring it especially since it leads straight to the front door of the king of propaganda's network.

8. CNN talked about it an hour ago or so. It was pretty good explaining
the depth of the hacking. More reporting than I expected.

9. It was one of the lead stories on CBS Evening News last night.
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 07:38 AM by Ilsa
It was the second story, I believe, and covered from a couple of angles, including the possibility of 911 victims involvement as hacking victims. The story has a lot of news appeal, so I suspect they'll keep covering it.

10. Right now, MSNBC is doing a very long, in-depth story about it.
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 07:45 AM by Atman
It's fascinating. The depth of the story is just incredible. Apparently, many in the British govt knew about what Murdoch was doing but they kept quiet not only out of fear of retribution, but more importantly, because Murdoch's three papers were like our Fox "News;" they needed Murdoch to help them and to help break the labor unions.

11. ABC News is covering it
I think some US networks smell blood in the water from one of their rivals (Fox), so they are starting to pounce.

12. Wanna bet some others have done the same crap to get scoops....
using those anonymous tips, unnamed sources and shadowy figures passing info. If you think its all on the up and up your dead wrong. Lots of people out there abusing the system (legal or otherwise) getting information for media. Its bought & paid for and its not just UK cops either.
