British parliamentary committe invites Rupert Murdoch, and James, and Rebekah Brooks to appear
before it. On BBC radio just now, confirmed by Tom Watson MP, a member of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee.

Rupert Murdoch (and James, for that matter) wouldn't have to comply - he is an American citizen, so could just leave the country. But it is indicative of the change in atmosphere - Brooks got away with saying she wouldn't appear before them a couple of years ago, but I can't see that happening now. Rupert used to be able to have secret meetings with Prime Ministers (taken in via private entrances rather than the front door of Number 10 where there are always photographers). Now he's going to have to sit in front of the cameras and answer questions, or look like he's got a lot to hide and cannot justify his business.

10. I'd see 'asked' and 'invited' as the same thing
not 'told' or 'ordered' - they won't be forced to attend. But it they want to retain regain any credibility, for instance to show News Corp is 'fit and proper', I think at least one of them will have to turn up - and probably a Murdoch (given that Brooks could eventually be sacked).

11. I dont think they have the authority to compel them to come.
and they would be foolish to do so. However their arrogance and belief that they can still control events and lie with impunity could always outweigh things.

I believe some (probably not so high up) will probably end up doing the orange jump suit march (or some sort of equivalence).
