Fan nearly falls trying to catch ball - picture
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 11:10 AM by Liberal_in_LA

Fan nearly falls from stands during homer derby

Trying to snare a towering shot by Fielder, Carmickle stepped up onto a metal table about 18 inches wide and reached down to catch the ball. It hit a wall several feet below Carmickle. His momentum carried him forward, headfirst over a short railing at the back of the table.

Carmickle was headed for a hard landing when his friend, Aaron Nelson, grabbed his legs and his brother, Kraig, grabbed him around the arms. Carmickle dangled briefly over a deck where a couple of cameras were positioned behind Chase Field's pool before being pulled back up to his seat as the crowd above and below gasped.

"He tried to catch it, I grabbed his legs and his brother grabbed his arms," said Nelson, who, along with Kraig Carmickle, is from Chandler. "So when he went over the ledge, we pulled him back. He wasn't going down, I was holding on."

The Carmickles and Nelson gathered themselves after the near fall and let out a few shouts before breaking into high-fives. They relived the moment with a few of the fans around them, then again as they looked at photos taken by an Arizona Republic photographer, who had shots from behind of Carmickle on the table, then falling.

Like none of us have ever fallen. Cynical. The guy was a freakin' fireman - think of the chances he took on ladders & roofs.

28. did you watch the video?
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 03:06 PM by frylock
he tried to steal the ball from the guy next to him. in so doing, he not only leaned to far over the railing, but too far to his left, causing him to lose balance. i'm sorry the guy's kid was there to have to see that. i'm sory the kid lost his dad over a lousy $5 baseball. being a firefighter i would have hoped that he would have realized how dangerous that move was.

i'm just curious as to why last weeks incident was a terrible accident while this is a potential darwin award nominee. is it because of the kid?

31. Yes I saw the video
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 04:24 PM by RamboLiberal
I didn't get impression he was trying to steal the ball. He leaned out over a railing. Fans do that all the time.

Yesterday's idiot was standing on an 18 inch platform. I got impression yesterday's Darwin candidate was thrill seeking.

I still call last week a tragic accident. Yeah and maybe the kid is the difference.

From other posts here this is why guy 2 is a dumbass.

BTW here's the video of the fatal fall. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_3asU-m_2E

ACCIDENT!

Make then at least waste high for a 6 footer.

It actually a foul ball Hamilton (outfielder) had tossed up into the stands.

Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 01:37 PM by tammywammy
Texas Stadium is where the Cowboys used to play in Irving.

It was a ball thrown up by Josh Hamilton, not a home-run. He was a firefighter, his funeral was yesterday.

10. Why do these people dive for the balls?
Didn't he just see or hear of the guy that just died, hitting the concrete with his head because he dived for the ball for his son? If they can't get it without diving they should just let someone else catch it that has a better position to catch it, or let it go.
