From the AFL-CIO blog: Wisconsin voters are set to go to the polls today
to pick Democratic candidates to oppose the 'Walker 6' - six Republican legislators who support Gov. Scott Walkers' "radical, anti-family, anti-community, pro-Koch Brothers agenda." Removing even
three of the Walker 6] would break the GOP hold on the Wiconsin Senate. The GOP is already ramping up another set of dirty tricks to bollix the whole deal:
Today, voters in six state senate districts will choose Democratic opponents for half a dozen Republican-held seats. But these primary elections have been marred by Walker supporters who
recruited fake candidates to run in the elections in an attempt to sow confusion among voters. The winners of today’s elections will face the six Republicans in an Aug. 9 general election.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Spokesman Graeme Zielinski slammed the election ruse.
It’s a total outrage what these Scott Walker Republicans are doing to preserve his radical agenda. The people of Wisconsin will see through these dirty tricks.
Democratic activists aren't sitting on their asses through this:
This past weekend, working family volunteers and community, civil rights and faith activists went door-to-door, staffed phone banks and set up information tables at popular locations in each district to get the word out about the real candidates vs. the ringers.
The
SFGate linked from the AFL-CIO post has more information on the evil ploys Wisconsin Republicans are using. It seems that in Wisconsin, like other states which have 'open' primaries, a candidate from another party can run as a candidate on the opposing party's ticket; i.e. Repubs can run as 'Democrats.' True wolves in sheep's clothing!
The cross-party candidates have imparted a sideshow element to a fight that is unprecedented and carries clear implications for Wisconsin's governance. The August recalls may tip the balance of the Republican-controlled Senate to the Democrats, who need a net gain of three seats to control the chamber and be able to block Walker's legislative agenda.
Gee! Republican dirty tricks! Who'da thunk?:eyes:
