New McConnell Plan: We Get Everything We Want On Debt Ceiling, Plus 12 Opportunities To Bash Obama

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing a new plan that would give the Republicans everything they want — $2.5 trillion in spending cuts — plus 12 new chances to blame Obama for everything. Under the McConnell plan:

1. Obama would have to request and increase in the debt ceiling along with “a plan to reduce spending by a greater amount.”

2. Either chamber could pass a “Resolution of Disapproval” blocking the plan. Since the GOP knows they don’t have enough votes in the Senate, this method ensures the House would pass such a resolution, sending it back to the President.

3. Obama would then have an opportunity to veto the resolution.

Either McConnell wants to be majority leader and thinks making Senate Dems vote repeatedly for the debt ceiling will get him there. Or he's legitimately afraid of what will happen if the two parties gridlock into August. Those are the only explanations that make sense.

1. The details don't matter. This exact thing won't happen.
What matters is that the Republicans were forced to punt. They've run out of room and they can't go for it.

8. They still have the big hammer. Voting to deny any increase in the debt limit. Some say they will
not do anything and somehow the 14th amendment will be invoked by the president.

4. Exactly what I thought when I heard it.
Sure, another chance to blame it on the President and look like innocent bystanders.

6. 2.5 trillion in savings? No problem. End the tax cuts/loopholes for the rich and big business,

make them pay their fair share of taxes and cut the war budget.

There is your 2.5 trillion and a lot more.

Any questions?

7. I know, right? Thats was I asked
If he has to offset the increase in the limit by $x - and the plan is that congress won't pass it anyway, then why focus on cuts - why not make it revenue driven?

Hell, if they are going to make the man own this as a unilateral decision, then we should have 110% say as to what is being owned!

9. The Republicans will blink first.
Upon further reading, I don't believe the president should about McConnell's proposal. The American public is against their hostage tactics. They can read the polls.....
