Obama risks losing the left by considering entitlement cuts

By Devin Henry | Published Fri, Jul 8 2011 8:10 am

WASHINGTON — The biggest news out of the bipartisan deficit reduction talks was that President Obama had put Medicare and Social Security on the negotiating table.
..............................

Leading the way was Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison’s Progressive Caucus, which announced they’d sent a letter to Obama with a simple ultimatum: cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security spending and you’ve lost our votes.
...................

“Cutting core benefits for recipients, changing eligibility standards, reducing the amount of money for the program … all bad ideas,” Ellison said.

Both Ellison and Minnesota Sen. Al Franken pointed to one way to cut Medicare costs without affecting benefits: allow Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies over the price of prescription drugs. Franken estimates such a measure would save $24 billion a year.

13. Is that what they teach at the OFA meetings?
Mean, nasty comments? Sure seems that way. From what I see here that is.

4. Obama betrays and fails his country by considering these cuts
Or is the horse-race the only thing that matters?

14. The thing about the "Lot's Daughters' tactic is this...
While it might work, and while the crowd might reject them, your daughters will always remember that you offered them up.

12. There is going to be a 100% Social Security cut on August 3

So losing sleep over deals the GOP won't accept is beside the point.

16. BOTH parties willing to screw grandma...
This was the subject of my blog (http://betterliberalarguments.blogspot.com/2011/07/debt-ceiling-negotiations.html) this week, inspired by George Carlin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLW1vFO-2Q).

Now Clair McCaskell is claiming McConnell has lost his mind, for suggesting they allow the President the authority to raise the debt limit all by himself.

This whole thing would be funny, if it weren't so sad. I find playing politics with our nation's credit rating to be more than a little irresponsible.

The biggest BS factor here is that Democrats aren't standing firm on SS and Medicare. How is it liberal or progressive to tell those who have the least ability, to provide MORE for themselves?

If there is anything my grandmother needs it is NOT 'less' medical care.
