Netflix doubling their prices as of 9/1
They're getting too big for their britches, apparently. Does nothing good last?

From an e-mail today:

" Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011."

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

1. That's a lot cheaper than I remember.
I had a netflix sub prior to the redbox and blockbuster express (blue box) appeared on every corner.
And I remember it being more money.

2. It was bound to happen
Once people find a "new" service useful and come to depend on it, clever suppliers will find a way to cash in..

Will people start going back to video stores?..oh wait.. Netflix put them all (mostly) out of business:evilgrin:

3. Its still cheaper then buying movies or
renting from a store like Blockbuster could cost 20 bucks for 4 movies.

4. A minor increase is not a doubling in price.
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 05:06 PM by GreenStormCloud
I have 4 DVDs at a time, no streaming at $27.99. They are increasing to $29.98. An increase of $1.99 is a long way from doubling their price. I can afford $1.99 a month extra.

7. We currently pay $8.99 for 1-at-a-time unlimited DVD plus streaming
So, yes, it actually is about double from what we are paying now. And we hardly use it. This may be the perfect time to take (another) hiatus from Netflix. They've more than made their money off of us. We maybe get one DVD a month and stream a movie once in a blue moon. We've belonged for maybe 5 years.

14. I think the OP is referring to a stream & 1 DVD at a time package.
It's going from $9.99/mo to $15.99/mo. That's a 60% increase and will probably mean I'm dropping Netflix. I'll miss it.

21. My plan will go up about 8.3%
I still don't think that is a bad price considering, I get one movie each day (DVD) M-S and can stream as many as I have time to watch. My only hopes are with the price increase they increase the number of streaming movies. I find many of my choices are DVD only or even worse it will expire from streaming and they don't have it as a DVD. I don't know the turn around most people get but there is a distribution center close to me. If I drop it in the mail today it arrives back to them tomorrow early enough for my next one to make it in the mail and arrive to me the next day. So, 3 out at a time give me basically 1 per day. Also, my mail arrives by 8:30am but the last pick-up from the post office isn't until 5pm, which means I can up it a little if I watch the movie early in the day.
I don't like the price increase, but it is still a good value for me.

34. Just got the email. I have had streaming all this time and not realized it.
Showed it to wife. She loves it. So I have streaming + 4 DVD. My price increase is only $1.99 per month.

8. My price is going up 60%.
I don't think that's a "minor" price increase. I'm bummed out. Was such a good deal. Unlimited streaming plus unlimited DVD's (but only one stratched up DVD at a time) was only 10 bucks. They're raising it to 16 bucks. I hope for that extra 60% they at least buy some new DVD's so I don't have to send back half of them because they won't play.

I am only active for about the first hour and the last three hours. During the middle four hours I am mostly just there. Boss is OK with me watching movies or reading.

9. That's ONLY if you want BOTH plans. Personally, I LOVE steaming movies.
It's so much easier. No hassles. Get the Roku remote and watch a movie. LOVE IT. And they're movies WE PICK. Perfect.

25. There is plenty of capacity for netflix, it's the studios driving the price increase
The studios cut deals with netflix before it became so popular, and are now increasing their license fees accordingly.

27. it's better than cable, they change all the time and
you have to listen to the stupid commercials all the time. You can't go elsewhere because the cable companies are monopolies and won't allow competition. And even On Demand now has commercials in it. And a limited selection. On Netflix I can watch all the stuff from England that I want to. Stuff that used to be on PBS and now isn't because they threw away or mismanaged their money.

33. Go to your email they sent you...
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 09:47 PM by Dappleganger
click on the link and it will take you directly to their website which shows what you will be paying for your plan after Sept. 1. Before we were grandfathered as long as we didn't change plans, but this time they are bumping everyone out of their plan even if you do nothing. The difference is that streaming is no longer being separated completely from dvd rental and is no longer seen as combined.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If in doubt contact Netflix, no doubt they are being hammered. Their comments were deactivated today on their blog and their email contact system was jammed.

Multiple people here on 4-dvd grandfathered plans who are getting bumped to the normal price: http://mashable.com/2011/07/12/netflix-price-hike-poll/

40. All existing customers will be moved to the new plans on 9/1
http://blog.netflix.com/

Go about halfway down the post. All existing customers will be moved to the new plans. Whhile they haven't specifically mentioned the older grandfathered plans, they've made it clear that current plans won't be grandfathered and have repeatedly said that ALL existing customers will be moved to the new pricing structure on 9/1.

As with the previous price increase this year, it appears that Netflix is no longer willing to grandfather the old plans and prices for existing users.

about $4/month - we have dial up and cannot use streaming.
