WASHINGTON — A key US senator called Tuesday for a probe into whether alleged hacking by Rupert Murdoch's media empire had extended to US citizens and warned of "severe" consequences if that proved the case.

"I encourage the appropriate agencies to investigate to ensure that Americans have not had their privacy violated," Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller said in a statement.

"I am concerned that the admitted phone hacking in London by the News Corp. may have extended to 9/11 victims or other Americans. If they did, the consequences will be severe," said Rockefeller, a Democrat.

"The reported hacking by News Corporation newspapers against a range of individuals-including children-is offensive and a serious breach of journalistic ethics. This raises serious questions about whether the company has broken US law," said Rockefeller.

1. "consequences will be severe" ...not if Republicans have anything to say about it...and they will
Murdoch will get away with it because he's done many a favor that solidified power for his fascist cronies, aka BushInc.

4. true - unless the same fussilade of revelations come out here... that have come out in the UK
The past week has been stunning. Follow The Guardian news blog. They have followed this for years - but only in the past week have events started spinning so fast out of control that the Murdochs that control. This unraveling is unthinkable - and just at the beginnings of the end stages in the UK. Hard to see how the current PM stands for long. Am not suggesting the following will also topple here, but - the unthinkable in the UK is happening - and quickly. Very worth following to begin to predict how far the toxicity spreads.

Btw - its been a long time, very nice to see you blm!

7. Look how long it took for US media to report the story. Same Saudi royals who own block of FOX also
own large shares of AOL/TimeWarner/CNN.

6. agreed - but just the beginning here
its taken more than half a decade for this to spin out of control of the Murdochs in the UK. If it is going to happen here - won't take nearly as long. Not because our system is less corrupt - but because of the snowball down the mountainside momentum of the UK events. It is going to take some time. Glad to see this move. Part of the beginning of the US show.

On the US side of the story - what is your take on the Newscorp announcement of 5 bill. worth of shares in the near future.

I think the previously perceived nuisance suit by Amalgamated Bank (on behalf of institutional share holders) - suddenly got a little hard to control when it was amended to include actions of Newscorp per the UK scandal. Perhaps I am reading more into it - but I think that announcement was a huge nod to how big and damaging to Newcorp the current unraveling events could be.
