To run in those districts that the Blue Dogs heavily lost last election. Many of them that we lost we can do without, but of course we don't like the Republicans that replaced them either. We should use 2012 as an opportunity to try to work outside of the DLC / Turd Way component of the party that tries to seize control of who runs in those districts and puts in corporatist serving candidates MASQUERADING as "moderates", which has been our modus operandi in recent years in areas where true progressives have a hard time winning seats.
Now if we found more of the Paul Hackett style candidates that have NO corporatist bones in their body, even if they might lean to the right on some issues with things like gun ownership, etc. that we appeal to them that most of their voters, even if more "moderate" still want things like Medicare and Social Security, and still want to tax the f'ing rich, and to get rid of NAFTA so that we can bring our jobs back here. There are so many issues where the corporatists have tried to own them by controlling the Republicans and the so-called "moderate" wing of our party, if we strategically focused on these districts now in getting decent populist and REAL moderates elected, that it would be easier for the House to vote on real progressive issues when we need them to to put in place things like tax changes, renegotiating NAFTA, etc.
Now the DLC / Turd Way might fight this, but I think now is the time to focus our energies here. It will be hard to primary Obama at this point, but if we surround him with real populists that aren't corporatists so that the corporatist hold on Congress no longer is an "ownership", then perhaps Obama will have to deal with those that don't want corporatism, or we can expose he and his type as being corporatists so that we don't make the same mistake in 2016, even if Obama is president in 2012 until then.
Then again, for those hoping that Obama is playing chess with us, and waiting for the winds of power to blow in the progressive direction, maybe he'll jump on and do a lot of great things with this power base in Washington too. One can only hope.
But I think that those regaining those seats with REAL populist Democrats and not corporatists this time around is a key, even if they aren't as left as we'd like them to be on all issues.
