MineralMan's Visual Guide to Commonly Misspelled Words: Issue 3
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 12:42 PM by MineralMan
Issue three, issued quickly, by popular request, covers Lose/Loose and Loser/Looser.

Previous issues, in reverse order:

Lose/Loser

If you lose in a sports competition, you are the loser.

If you are a loser, someone may do this. People who do this should be aware of the potential for irony:

Loose/Looser

The pants in the photo on the left are quite loose. They're much looser than the pants on the right.

When did the letter "u" start being pronounced like the letter "o" in so many words? Oltimate instead of Ultimate. Meh.

I suppose it's sort of a southern pronunciation as in dee'-fence or vee'-hicle. Another big "meh" from me.

24. Commas Are A Big Problem Too. I Know I'm Guilty Of Not Using Or
using too many from time to time.

I do know people who write EVERYTHING in lower case, and those who simply don't care if something is correct. My husband has always had a slight hearing problem and really destroys pronunciation of many words. His response is "you know what I'm saying, so it doesn't matter." Still I do try to help him out. For me it's a matter of whether (weather, another one) I want to put up with the feeling of finger nails scraping a chalk board or not.

Kind of an OCD thing!

59. i type everything in lower case UNLESS i want emphasis.
as a paralegal, i spend my whole work day using correct capitalization so when it comes to play time, i'm not so rigid. since i never took a typing lesson, not obeying the capitalization rules is just easier. i agonize enough over what i post, i'm not going to worry about capitalizing. i'll save my agonizing for grammar, spelling and syntax.

21. Never Saw Your Post Of This Nature Before... But I'm SURE Glad You're
doing this. There have been so many times I've been tempted to do spelling corrections myself. Then of course, there are grammatical errors too.

I like the way you are presenting these though because I know that some people are immigrants and the English language can get complicated for them. One I notice a lot is, to, too and two. Not that I don't make errors myself or use slang at times, but I have noticed more and more errors as times goes by.

I'm not sure whether it's caused by texting or something else, but I find that even those who aren't immigrants make an awful lot of spelling errors. I'm always tempted to point them out, but as I said, you really never know about the person who has made the error.

Again, I like the little teaching lessons here and hope others do too.

About 95% of the time I see "lead" on here it is meant to be the past tense of lead, not the metal.

39. That's a good one, and we shouldn't forget the journalist's
use of "lede." It's incorrect, but it's become standard. It derives from "lead paragraph." I do not know how it came into use, though. As a professional journalist, it has always bugged the heck out of me, and I've always refused to use it.

49. I've wondered if some (many?) of these spelling and grammatical errors
have come about through the use of spell-checking software, in particular, in early versions of word processing programs. I recall catching many errors the software missed, because the words were legitimate, but the software wasn't quite smart enough yet to catch the usage error.

It may, however, be the source of the "should of" error, since it's been used in writing and speech for so long.
