WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) —
She’s leveraging the need of both the White House and the Republican majority in the lower chamber of Congress for some Democratic votes to pass any deficit compromise to get a voice in the negotiations. She’s confronting the Democratic administration as the only party leader willing to draw some lines in the sand.
Her message is clear and emphatic. “We do not support cuts in benefits for Social Security and Medicare,” Pelosi has repeatedly said.
Pelosi’s mantra: that these entitlement programs aren’t responsible for the recent increases in the deficit and that cuts in these programs would provide no immediate relief.
According to press reports, Pelosi was castigated at one of the recent se melodramatic crisis meetings last week for suggesting once again at this late stage that the debt ceiling issue be decoupled from the deficit debate. Obama, with typical male condescension (remember “you’re likable enough, Hillary,” from a 2008 debate with Hillary Clinton?), told her, according to the reports, that that train had left the station.
The deficit debate itself has been a painful display of willful ignorance and blinkered ideology. Obama’s tactics betray either profound intellectual dishonesty (the political expediency argument) or powerfully willful ignorance (the Krugman view).
