The irony of it all...
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 02:41 AM by NuclearDem
Alright, for one, I understand that we're just a message board, and that this particular message I'm about to rail against isn't as widespread as it is on the right, but I have to say it.

I love how some DUer's are responding to someone who killed six people and injured a Democratic Congresswoman allegedly because he fell victim to the right's call to violence, by saying he should be tortured, or killed outright.

Are we really showing our true colors here, or just being hypocrites?

Come on guys, violence is violence, no matter who says it or where they call for it. You call for an alleged murderer to be shot or tortured, you're no different than Repug politicians who put crosshairs on Dem politicians.

EDIT: And I've noticed a lot of those comments in question have been deleted by the mods...which I'm very happy to see.

But it seems the posts are being deleted.

11. well, the first one was the one i was talking about where the guy has a winking emoticon
after his comment "who's opposed to waterboarding now?" bad taste but obviously just being sarcastic.

The second is so redacted that there's no telling what those posts were.

12. the first one is just a series of rants against water boarding
I don't see any serious suggestion that he should be tortured, just some attempts at irony claiming that you can water board because it isn't torture anymore

5. DU is not responding this way..."some" on DU are responding this way.
"Many" of us are posting our opposition to the death penalty.

Thank you for realizing this.

6. First of all, I don't want the guy tortured or killed
Not even the death penalty if he's found guilty. So my comment isn't a defense of any position of mine. That said: there's a huge difference between someone calling for the death of an elected official, and someone wishing that a cold-blooded murderer be deprived of his life. I don't agree with that position, but I certainly can see the difference.

10. Alert if you see this.
It's against DU rules to advocate violence.

And it's a time honored Freeper/ratfucker/agent provocateur tactic to make false accounts and post nothing but calls to violence to make liberals look bad or try to flush out people in agreement.

16. Actually, if you look at your first link, the "waterboard" post was made with a
wink and ALL of the responses were anti-torture. There wasn't one post on that thread that advocated what you're suggesting above and there weren't any deleted posts.

I note on the second link that you agreed with the notion that the violent rhetoric by right-wingers may well have contributed to these murders. THAT is what I've seen the vast majority of DUers talking about (and 100% what I posted about on Facebook). The only "lynch mob" mentality has been to lynch the use of violent rhetoric as it's been used so freely by right wing radio hosts, right wing politicians, Tea Baggers, etc.

I'm sure there are SOME DUers advocating their own brand of violence but it's a distinct tiny minority.
