MineralMan's Visual Guide to Commonly Misspelled Words: Issue 5
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 01:16 PM by MineralMan
I'm not going to give this a break today nor am I going to put on the brakes, since I'm on a roll. In this issue, we deal with another common pair of homophones: break and brake

Here are the previous issues in reverse order

Break

Before making an omelette, one must break one or more eggs.

Some people find that eating too many eggs, however, can cause them to break wind.

After that arduous task, you may need a break.

Don't relax too much, though. Important news may break at any time.

Brake

Your car, or other vehicle, has brakes.

In certain situations, you may have to brake hard to avoid a disaster.

Ironic:
What happens when someone goes off on a self-righteous rant and makes a fundamental error.

31. Is it too late to REC THIS into +zone?
Neither this thread, nor any of its predecessors need be interpreted as a "self-righteous rant."

As a multilingual ESL trainer across the the Big Pond, I have always searched for ways to "anchor" things in the minds of my clients. Sometimes it's a visual, other times an experience, a joke, a mistake...

Let me give an example:

I KNEW I was sunk when I first realized the complexity of going from 1 or 2 articles to 3 (in my 40's) plus having to
deal with declinations. One day I was explaining to Ruben over breakfast (age 4) that my Deutsch was a bit shaky. He was drilling me on nouns on the table and when we got to "spoon," he got a bit shaky. In French, one can intuit the article fairly easily. In German, NOT. I figured a spoon MUST be neutral or feminine. He agreed. IMMEDIATELY, BOTH OF HIS PARENTS appeared in the kitchen door saying simultaneously, "DER LÖFFEL." I'll NEVER make a mistake on that noun! It's ANCHORED.

8. How kind of you to post three times in my thread. It helps
keep it high on the GD topic list. Would you like me to post a thread about the derivation of the word "putz?" I'd be happy to. Just let me know.

24. Yeaterday my cousin and I had a misunderstanding
about "Putz." (The Yiddish meaning was not involved. Hubby has been on good behaviour lately.) Anyway, renovation downstairs ist fertig! It was just the word describing HOW that was in question. DAMN our D'englisch!

Do you think I should start a thread on the suave way to use apostrophes? And when to eschew them?
