JetBlue offers 'Carmageddon' flyover: Long Beach to Burbank for $4
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/carmageddon-jet-blue-offers-flights-from-long-beach-to-burbank-this-weekend.html

JetBlue Airways is doing its part to help out commuters during this weekend's so-called Carmageddon.

With the 405 Freeway set to be closed from late Friday until early Monday because of construction, the airline said it would offer $4 fares each way from Long Beach Airport to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.

"Fly JetBlue between Burbank and Long Beach this Saturday (7/16) only!" the airline's website says. "Fares are $4 each way so get on board quick -- book now through July 16 or while supplies last. Or for $5 each way customers can also enjoy an Even More Space seat on their Carmageddon Fly-over, which includes early boarding and early access to overhead bin space as well as a spacious seat with extra legroom -- limited quantity available on each flight."

"This will be our shortest commercial flight," JetBlue spokewoman Sharon Jones told The Times. "We thought this would be a fun and unique idea. We looked at it as a way to introduce our product to customers who have never joined JetBlue."

JetBlue is offering two fights from Long Beach to Burbank and two from Burbank to Long Beach -- both on Saturday.

The flights will take 20 minutes.

2. And how long will the TSA screenings take?
I think I'd prefer surface streets to TSA screenings.

And the Long Beach airport is no delight, either.

4. I wish Jet Blue would have a nonstop from Boston's Logan to Burbank.
I have that pesky JFK layover that can get delayed big time.

Better yet, have a nonstop from Bradley (between Hartford and Springfield). I gave up on Southwest's interminable all day trips to Burbank and back...

5. They're closing a freeway for a weekend, and it's "carmageddon"?
I'm guessing that 95% of Angelenos are shrugging over the alarmist nonsense. The popular media must think we're such a bunch of weenies. But let's stir up the pot; maybe someone will get panicked into shooting someone in a fit of rage, and we can cover that.

6. I think it's kind of funny but seriously, one traffic light out can mess up this whole town's traffi
A few years ago, the light at Laurel Canyon and Sunset was blinking red and traffic was snarled for miles.

Don't underestimate what this may cause.

9. If it's on a weekday, it will be truly carmageddon.
Problem is most of the hype is local tv news produced.

10. My reading is
I think they're going to close it on a Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday, so there are two weekdays involved. Not so very long ago, they closed I-405 in Portland for an extended period of time for resurfacing. Portland isn't quite as highway-dependent as Los Angeles, but it was an inconvenience. After about three hours, people adjusted their routes and schedules and we survived. I think Angelenos will be at least as adaptive as Portlanders. Too bad the local media hypesters won't receive the ridicule they deserve.

7. I remember a Southwest Flight - Houston-LA - $99 - Free booze all the way.

That was the mid-1980s. Flying used to be cheap and fun, sometimes.
