“Obama lit him up. Cantor sat in stunned silence,”
“Then he said we also ought to get in the mode here, because we’re going to have to decide by Friday which way we’re going,” Cantor said. “He said really we ought to all start to think about things we can do rather than things we can’t.”

That’s when Cantor said he would be willing to abandon his own insistence on having just one vote on the debt ceiling if they could agree to a smaller package of cuts in exchange for a shorter-term hike that would require another increase before the 2012 election.

But Obama said he wouldn’t do the debt-limit increase incrementally and that he would veto a short-term bill.

“That’s when he got very agitated,” Cantor told reporters.

“Obama lit him up. Cantor sat in stunned silence,” said an official in the meeting. “It was incredible. If the public saw Obama he would win in a landslide.”

1. IMO, Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell realized how fragile their position was as soon as
Obama announced he was ready to give them their wish: to be a one-term administration, but on his terms, not theirs.

45. ok now these might seem silly analogies,
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 12:52 PM by Volaris
but I'm reminded of that scene in the Matrix Reloaded where Neo just walks the FUCK OUT on the Architect, and leaves them twisting with the Smith Program gaining enough power to destroy EVERYTHING....

OR (since I just finished the last Potter book again, in preparation for the last film) the way Harry decides "fuck it, if this asshole is going to probably kill me ANYWAY, it will be done MY way (on my feet); at least that way, I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I went out like a MAN, instead of just another chump VICTIM.

I can only envision that the scene in that room mirrored the cut from Aliens, though, where Ripley just kinda looks around, and then promptly loses her fuckin' mind and unleashes hell to High Heaven on that damned Queen and all the eggs lol....

ok that's all my geek references for the week, I think, and no I am NOT trying to de-rail the thread, I swear heehee

Peace all, and enjoy the popcorn on this one=)

3. Because if he got angry in public . . .
it would be like Dean's scream - edited, played on a loop, and misrepresented by pundits. Headlines are one thing, film is another.

Gawd knows how our right wing media would blow that out of proportion.

give the media an inch and they'd go ten thousand miles with the angry black man routine

48. It matters to voters.
Bill Maher recently said he understands that 1% always votes for the Republicans, the richest 1%. He also understands that about 50% typically vote for Democrats, but he doesn't understand why the other 49% vote for Republicans or support Republican policies or hold their views.

5. I recall the campaign took great pains
to make sure he couldn't be called an "angry black man."

But I don't see how anyone can spend five minutes with Cantor and not want to strangle him.

9. I believe Cantor wants to bait Obama into violence or cursing . . .
Unfortunately for him, Obama is way cooler than most of us. Personally, I would probably say, "Shut the fuck up, you stupid asshole." Not very presidential, but satisfying. Walking out was a better move.

Talking with Cantor is like replying to a troll.

Butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. It's how you talk to kids... hard words in dulcet tones... bandaid and peas.

I would have to preface every statement aimed at Cantor with, "You stupid fuck..."

39. You know, the people who worry about "angry black men"
don't vote for "nice black men", either. Restraint is admirable, but the 24/7/365 Zen thing just makes it look like either everything he says/does is carefully scripted or he simply doesn't give a shit about anything. This is a situation where I think he can and should show some justifiable annoyance.

13. President Obama has the
ability to communicate issues to the public without appearing "angry." While I do not agree with a number of the things he has done while serving in office, I admire his ability to communicate ideas. I am hoping that, within the next week, the American public gets the opportunity to see the President in "prime time," presenting his case in the rational, easily understood manner he is so capable of doing.

Barack Obama also has the capacity to inject some emotion into his public presentations -- a bit of humor, and a hint of frustration at his opposition's bull-headedness. I think that we will see both.

Ann Richards was on Politically Incorrect with ever-interrupting Ann Coulter once. Richards looked at her and said, "Hush!" And Ann Coulter hushed. A moment I shall cherish forever.

...judging by his remarks this morning:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/07/14/national/w065949D54.DTL&tsp=1

Reid: Cantor should not be in debt limit talks

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says House Republican Leader Eric Cantor should not be part of the debt limit negotiations. He's calling the Virginia Republican congressman "childish."

Reid says Cantor's conduct during the sensitive White House talks have "shown, in Reid's words, "he shouldn't even be at the table." Reid says other congressional leaders are negotiating in good faith as an Aug. deadline approaches for raising the debt limit.

46. Almost the entire GOP catalog is toxic and they know it
The GOP gets points, riles their base, and attracts low-info voters with general talking points. Cut taxes! Well, that is attractive to almost anyone, but when it comes time to match the tax cut to the service cut, all of a sudden voters look more closely. The repugs want to kill medicare and SS, but know that doing so (and getting blamed for it) would destroy their party. The idea that you can keep an extra $500 a year sounds good, until you, your parents, or grandparents freeze or starve to death because their retirement account was raided by corporate malfeasance and SS is gone. The same with medicare--the money saved is nothing when you, your parents, or others die because they can't afford to see a doctor.

It is very akin to the abortion issue--they may truly be anti-abortion, but they know that if they succeed in making abortion illegal again, they'll find themselves far on the wrong side of an issue that most voters would find much more wrong than they poll. In other words, most people are against, or at least uncomfortable with the issue of abortion in theory--but when it becomes a concrete issue and they, their daughters, sisters, wives, etc. are being maimed in back alley "clinics" or forced to carry a child they aren't prepared or interested in, then the polls quickly shift from theory to practical.

The GOP MUST do everything it can to keep cause and effect from being linked in the voter's minds. Ironically, one of the very best strategies for dealing with this is to call their bluff, giving them the opportunity to get what they say they want, but only if they'll put their names on the consequences as well.
