Republicans want $55 million in federal dollars for security for the Republican National Convention

TAMPA - As many as 15,000 journalists, TV crews and bloggers are expected at the Republican National Convention in 2012, making it one of the country's most high profile events -- and a high-profile target.

"We need to make sure that the nominee and the delegates are safe because God forbid there be an incident," Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn said.

Mayor Buckhorn and several others were on Capitol Hill making that very point. Security for the four-day convention will cost about $55 million, and they want the federal government to pony up.

"We need the money soon. We can't wait until next year. We have to have it this year. That's very important," said RNC host committee Ken Jones.

Why does the RNC want federal government handouts?!?!?!?

You've got bootstraps. Use them. When all else fails, ask the Koch heads for help.

In case Tampa doesn't already know this, we're in a Recession here. We're all having to make due with less, not gouge the American tax payers for more.

26. CIty Pages still does a good job sometimes.
This week they dropped the ball on their Bradlee Dean story

http://www.citypages.com/2011-07-13/news/bradlee-dean-s-benediction/

he's the "minister" who delivered the incendiary invocation at the Capitol earlier this year.

CP didn't follow up on the real moneymaker in Dean's operation - the Street Teams. I swear, I've seen these people around at gas stations in the past. The have a spiel about helping kids and are vague about what organization they're with.

(apologies to the OP for the side topic)

27. It's not just political conventions
Any event that receives National Special Security Event designation is at least partially funded by taxpayers. That includes the Superbowl and Academy Awards.
