Hate crimes against GLBT rose 13% in 2010
An 18-year-old gay man from Texas allegedly slain by a classmate who feared a sexual advance. A 31-year-old transgender woman from Pennsylvania found dead with a pillowcase around her head. A 24-year-old lesbian from Florida purportedly killed by her girlfriend's father, who disapproved of the relationship.

The homicides are a sampling of 2010 crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people compiled by a national coalition of anti-hate organizations.

The report, released Tuesday, showed a 13% increase over 2009 in violent crimes committed against people because of their perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity or status as HIV positive, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.

Last year's homicide count reached 27, up from 22 in 2009, and was the second-highest total since the coalition began tracking such crimes in 1996. Of those killed, 70% were minorities and 44% were transgender women.

I'm frankly not surprised at all. With all the hate-filled rhetoric spewed by right-wingers in the media a lot these days, as well as Dems who who regularly show their own bigotry by failing to support and fight for GLBT equal rights, the message to the assholes who are prone to hateful violence comes through loud and clear. Oh, when a teenager commits suicide as the result of bullying and it gets lots of play in the press, a ReTHUG or two will be quoted as saying that's awful, blah blah blah blah. And then the same jackass goes right back to spewing hateful venom about and at GLBTs.

1. About that last paragraph. Candidate Obama employed as
surrogate a man the Obamas call a 'minister' who is infamous for his TV appearances on which he calls for war on gay people. War means violent attacks. The line is 'this is war, the gloves are off, they are trying to kill our children.' So that is what was done in our own Party, while the majority group nodded along and rationalized the presence of what it basically a peer to the Bachmanns from the ex gay industry.
Some Democrats have done far worse than 'failing to support' some have sicked hate talkers on us for their own political convenience.
Those who legitimize haters are haters themselves, period.

2. You're right -- I stand absolutely corrected.
What can I say? We suck. Our Party sucks big time these days. Civil rights for all are being hatcheted with the willing compliance of Democrats, and with the eager leadership of Obama wielding the one of the biggest hatchets. And GLBT rights? Yeah, whatever. But you're right, Obama and others are not just guilty by omission, they're guilty by commission.
