Whaling commission bans suitcases of cash


The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has approved measures to stop delegates bringing briefcases of cash to meetings, in an attempt to prevent cash-for-votes scandals.

The measures come after years of allegations that Japan has been paying fees for some commission members in return for their support in the forum.

Previously countries have been able to pay their memberships to the IWC in cash.

They will now have to pay membership fees by bank transfer from government accounts to enable traceability.
