If he lives at home and is mentally ill, then I'm sure his parents have been going through some terrible times for a very long time. Mentally ill people do not have "motivations" as we would think of them.

especially if he is suffering from schizophrenia - 22 is a pretty typical age for onset of something like that. They are grieving like the rest of us.
