SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- Security officials say Yemeni tribesmen have killed a colonel and two of his aides in an ambush of their convoy.

The officials say Friday's attack took place near Sharab, northwest of the city of Taiz.

The area has seen huge anti-government protests during a five-month uprising seeking to push President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power.

Security across Yemen has largely collapsed during the uprisings, with armed tribesmen and radical Islamist groups taking over in the poor country's weakly governed provinces.

1. Weird to think of a modern country having armed insurrections from "tribesmen"
Seems like something the Romans would have had to deal with.
