Mitt Romney Caught With Hand in PAC Till (LeftInAlabama blog)

Today the Alabama and New Hampshire Democratic parties are filing
new evidence of Romney's questionable PAC dealings with the FEC and
state election authorities and are calling on Romney to provide a
detailed accounting of his state PAC expenditures. Judge Mark Kennedy,
chair of the Alabama Democratic Party, had this to say about Romney's
PAC dealings:

"We call on all the relevant state and federal election committees to
take a close look at potential wrongdoing by Mitt Romney and his
campaign organization. It is important that candidates follow the law
and it appears that Romney's campaign may be using funds collected here
in Alabama to aid his presidential campaign. Furthermore, it’s a
disgrace that Alabama Lieutenant Governor Ivey would involve herself in
a campaign that uses relaxed Alabama law to potentially violate federal
campaign law."

Romney's Alabama PAC still has money in its account and has apparently not
stopped raising money. Excerpts from the complaint filed today, bold added:
****
To make a long story short, Romney's campaign is using these state PACs to
accept contributions in excess of the federal limit, is using money supposedly
raised for state elections to influence a federal election, and -- even now
that Romney is an official candidate, numerous media outlets have questioned
the practice, and a complaint has been filed with the FEC -- they are still
doing it. Even more troubling, Romney's Alabama PAC will not have to disclose
its spending until January 31, 2012. Laying aside possible violations of the
law, Romney's financial finagling through state PACs will be invisible to early
state primary voters. So much for the transparency and adherence to the letter
of the law Republicans pretend to love.

How can Kay Ivey, Robert Aderholt, Mike Rogers and all these other Republicans
support Mitt Romney in the face of evidence he committed voter fraud and is using
Alabama PACs to violate federal election law? IOKIYAR ... It's OK if you're
a Republican.

2. Watch the Justification Machine crank up
While House Republicans are calling for yet another investigation of Planned Parenthood, and citing Jon Kyl's "not intended to be factual" claim that 97% of Planned Parenthood's mission is abortion, the Republican Justification machine will be in overdrive to explain why Romney's patent violations of campaign law are excusable, no big deal, and a librul media witch hunt. And the librul media will dutifully pass it all along without comment or criticism.

4. Those Alabama PACs are crazy
I looked at them a little a couple of years ago in connection with the Jack Abramoff scandal, and it's a system made for political money-laundering. There are complex networks of them, mainly run by the same small handful of people, and they constantly transfer funds from one to another. A large corporation like Alabama Power can donate to one PAC, but by the time the money actually gets to a candidate, there's no way of telling that's where it originally came from.

Given how lax the system is, I'm not surprised there could be hijinks involving Romney's state PAC.
