I forgot that you can't even mildly criticize Jon Stewart in DU.

3. I agree, it is time... |

That message is just fine, but his equating the two sides was just plain silly.

18. actually his post was coherent |
|
and stated exactly what Stewart needed to rethink. Stewart, at his rally with Cobert, famously said that the left and the right were equally extreme. The OP wonders if Stewart still thinks that after what happened yesterday.

7. I respectfully disagree |
|
Even Al Sharpton made the point yesterday: we all need to consider our complicity in this and take time today to think about how we contribute to the toxic political environment. Ratcheting up rhetoric and hyperbole in any way is contributing to the general climate. To me, it's like a noisy restaurant: one table starts being obnoxious and loud, so the nearby tables have to start talking louder. Then all of a sudden the rest of the tables start yelling even louder, and pretty soon the place is pandemonium.
So I think Stewart's general complaint stands. I stopped watching Keith Olbermann a year or so ago, although I agree with him politically, because of his dramatic, hyperbolic style, and his monomaniacal daily focus on right-wing nuts. He could be doing something more constructive: talking policy say, and marginalizing stupid people by simply not giving them the time of day. "Worst Person In the World" is in itself an overly dramatic, hyperbolic, and contentious title and it ratchets up the volume. When he shouts, the other side shouts back louder.
It is true that left politicians and commentators are not the ones advocating violence. But that is not the point. We all need to do our part in bringing back what Jon Stewart rightly calls "sanity."

To make his point, he equated people like Keith Olbermann and Ed Schultz to people like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.
Loud is one thing and it may be obnoxious, but it isn't race-baiting, hate-baiting and gun violence advocating.

Does John Stewart really believe that the left wing is just as bad as the right wing when it comes to vitriolic rhetoric?
