Obama Eliminates Warren as Consumer Head - Bloomberg
Obama Eliminates Warren as Consumer Head
By Mike Dorning and Carter Dougherty - Bloomberg
Jul 15, 2011 4:41 PM PT

<snip>

President Barack Obama has chosen a candidate other than Elizabeth Warren as director of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, according to a person briefed on the matter. The president’s choice is a person who already works at the consumer agency, the person said today. Obama may make the nomination as soon as next week, another person briefed on the administration’s plans said.

The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the process isn’t public, didn’t give the name of the choice.

Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard professor, was appointed last fall by Obama to set up the consumer bureau until a director was named. Warren previously was head of the congressional watchdog panel overseeing the bank bailout.

Raj Date, a top deputy to Warren at the consumer bureau, was on a short list of candidates to become director, Bloomberg News reported last month, citing a person briefed on the process.

8. This is DU--things always get posted repeatedly here.
The important thing is not that it has been posted already, but that it has not been posted by the DUer who wants to post it now.

4. *sigh* What she said yesterday regarding "the appointment"
SOURCE: CNN(Money)
CNN's Austin Alonzo contributed to this report.

"With a week to go before the new consumer bureau takes off, the White House has yet to appoint its director -- an omission that Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat, asked Warren about."

"Warren was careful and succinct, saying that when the director is confirmed and in place and the bureau gets all of its powers, "it will be a very good day.""

11. I agree, and I think the decision is a wise one...
Appointing someone Ms. Warren thinks quite highly of is akin to cloning her, leaving her free to add her impact somewhere else...like Congress.

16. Nothing at all in that statement which indicated she didn't want to run it herself n/t
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 08:06 PM by brentspeak
And since, for the past couple of years, she's never once publicly stated in any way, shape, or form any lack of interest in the job, clearly, you must know Elizabeth Warren personally to have made such a statement.

17. You can read into it whatever you want.
And since people think they know more than she does, welcome to their opinion.

I don't know her anymore than you do, but I have no reason to think she's lying.

21. Apparently, you think you know more than she does
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 08:17 PM by brentspeak
You even think you know her own thoughts better than she does.

That's an amazing ability to have. For how long have you had it? For as long as you've had the brilliant and lamebrained idea of attempting to turn the discussion inside-out by insinuating that people have somehow accused Warren of lying about something?

I think her response indicates a confidence in the appointee, and I don't think she expected it to be her.

14. I like Bza Dem's take on it:

Putting in someone she thinks highly of is akin to cloning her, thus freeing her up to have an impact in Congress should she choose to run (as rumored).

18. That is a misleading headline. Warren is free to stay in her current position for as long as she
likes. Given that Republicans will likely filibuster any actual appointment and block the Senate from taking a recess, Warren may decide to stay in her current position for the duration of the Obama presidency for all we know, continuing to run the bureau. Bloomberg should fix the headline.

"Obama Eliminates Warren..." :wow:

It was a temporary post that she didn't even want to take in a permanent way.

And Bloomberg people know that.... those devils!
