Jackson Lee: Congress complicating debt ceiling because Obama is black
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) on Friday strongly suggested that members of Congress are making it difficult for President Obama to raise the debt ceiling because of his race.

"I do not understand what I think is the maligning and maliciousness this president,” said Jackson Lee, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. “Why is he different? And in my community, that is the question that we raise. In the minority community that is question that is being raised. Why is this president being treated so disrespectfully? Why has the debt limit been raised 60 times? Why did the leader of the Senate continually talk about his job is to bring the president down to make sure he is unelected?”

Earlier in her speech, Jackson Lee said Obama has been targeted unlike any other president.

"I am particularly sensitive to the fact that only this president — only this one, only this one — has received the kind of attacks and disagreement and inability to work, only this one," said Jackson Lee from the House floor.

1. No other president has gotten the shit from the media or from congress over this debt ceiling...
So I'm thinking that Representative Jackson Lee might be on to something.

9. Before this week, did you know that Congress raised the debt ceiling 19 times under Raygun?
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 12:18 AM by Major Hogwash
I thought they may have raised it 4 times, but I had no idea they raised it 19 fucking times.
That's incredible.
Congress back then laid down and did everything Ronnie wanted, and he took us on the roller coaster ride of deficit spending like never ever before.
"Deficit's don't matter" is what Cheney said while Bush was president.

But now, after the worst recession in 70 years, the Republicans want to cut the deficits!!
Incredible.
I knew it was going to be bad because of the amount of racism in America, but I had no idea that they were willing to take us to the brink of disaster like this.

Jackson Lee is absolutely correct, and she is one the bravest, most courageous women Congress has ever had.
She's a great example of the kind of representatives that Texas can send to Washington to help solve the problems of this nation and lead us in the 21st century.

13. No, Exactly, Thanks!
And the suggestion that it's not the least bit about the color of his skin demonstrates ignorance, if not worse.

19. No, and this is fucking ridiculous
Seriously, this is fucking ridiculous. It's because of politics not race. I wish Lee would shut the fuck up. She really needs a challenger in her next primary because she needs to get out of Washington with her hate.

Let's just try and divide this country as much as possible. Call others names at every chance even if they are based on nothing.

I actually think they are opposing Obama because he had a basketball court installed in the White house. They voted to raise the debt ceiling 19 times before...but that was different those presidents didn't play basketball. Now that there is a basketball playing president, they refuse to raise the debt ceiling.

Yeah, its ridiculous to say that, but thats what you and Jackson Lee are doing. Taking something completely unrelated to the debt issue and claiming it as fact is pretty dumb.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

Damn racist Obama, he only opposed it because Bush was white! :eyes:

3. I have to wonder why MOST of us have NEVER heard of
this whole 'debt ceiling' thing in our lives, but yet it is the BIG DEAL now. Why is that? It isn't like we are suddenly in 'debt' and haven't been THERE before.

I think the Congresswoman is on to something.

6. Obama doesn't need the Republicans to do him in.
Sheila Jackson Lee may be correct about the Republican's motivations, but Obama is doing himself in with his willingness to compromise Social Security and Medicare. Those are programs that keep many, many Americans alive, many of them African-Americans. And those Americans will not forget the callous disregard for their needs and dignity that Obama has shown in recent days and weeks.

This is hideous. I don't care what president would cavalierly dismiss Medicare and Social Security. He would pay for it. Bush certainly did, and he was a white Republican from an old, established family.

This is not about race. This is about Obama's making a mess.

8. Cantor's Virginia Accent
When I read that Cantor has made a nuisance of himself at these formal discussions, interrupting the president, he reminds me of that other Southern Republican who shouted You lie! during the State of the Union speech.

It's hard to escape noticing it . . .

14. Good. I'm glad she said it because it's true.
And you know how enraged they must become whenever he gets the best of them. It's doubly bad because they were bested by a Black man.

This past two years or so has sickened me toward my country. The true ugliness that usually simmers below the surface has been exposed and it's sickening. And I HATE it that they found two women, Palin and Bachman, to carry the water to make the ugliness bloom and grow. Sad.

16. Meh
He's the first black president. That doesn't necessarily mean that everything that happens for the first time is because of his race.

If Hillary had been elected, you'd be arguing "They're fighting over the debt ceiling because she's a woman!"

I find it hard to believe that the Republican party would not be playing the same political games if Biden were president. This is a golden opportunity for them, and they're using it.

21. 100% correct
They would do the same thing if it were Hillary or Biden. It has nothing to do with race. It is politics.

They are opposing him because of politics not race. What is wrong with some of you?

25. When Joe Wilson said, "Liar", there was also an element of racism. It doens't have to be 100%
100% racist for race to play a role.

Truth is, the Republicans and MSM and others have elevated this Debt Ceiling thing into yet another faux crisis.

They do this with great ease, and they do it more easily because of the color of his skin.

Members who share this opinion with me ought not to be accused of race-baiting.

20. The Clintons
Bill Clinton was accused of rape
Hillary was accused of having a hand in Vince Foster's death.

Sure..some folks may be opposed to President Obama due to his pigment. However, most are opposed because he is a Democrat (and they are assholes) and that is the game.

Unless you can find multiple repubs on tape calling President Obama racial slurs or openly making racist statements - IT IS RACIST to accuse all white opposition of being racist. Accusations of rampant racism (without evidence) are inherently racist - I know...the irony is stupifying - but if you look at it honestly you will see that.

26. She's right to a large degree
You can see the "good ole boy" mentality is a lot of what republicans are saying. They will
not allow any black person to lead them the way a president needs to lead. In my opinion
they do their best to talk down to him as much as they can.
