Answers:
1. Bronze horses in Venice, stolen by Napoleon, returned in 1814
2. Cimabue's "Crocefisso" damaged in Florence flood of 1966, as "restored."
3. Bust of Costanza Bonarelli by Bernini, who arranged later to have her face slashed.
4. Bird in Space by Brancusi. Put on trial in the U.S. due to a dispute over whether it was liable for customs duty or exempt as a work of art. Art prevailed.
5. Adoration of the Magi by Ghirlandaio, used as a table for meals, etc (and badly damaged), by German soldiers in WW2.
6. The Taking of Christ, "lost" painting of Caravaggio, discovered in Ireland in 1990, authenticated in 1993.

1. The Amber Room in Russia. Destroyed by the Nazis.

On edit - I looked it up and learned that the original Amber Room was created by German craftsmen as a gift to Peter the Great, so it's even more ironic that it was destroyed by the Nazis.

Also learned that it was partially reconstructed in the 1970s.

I have read that no one know what happened to it...but then others say it was destroyed.

3. Neither, really. I've just always loved art and art history. I enjoy your Friday threads.

I checked in this morning to find out the answer to last night's puzzle, and happened to recognize the Amber Room. I've always thought it was fascinating. I love plants and rocks.

5. If I recognize the pieces I know the answers. It's very hit and miss, though.

I've never formally studied art history and I'm not really an art history buff - I've read very little on the subject. So it's just a matter of whether or not I happen to recognize the particular piece.

It's fun for me but I rarely post in your threads. There are probably hundreds of other DUers like me who really enjoy your Friday afternoon threads but rarely post. Your threads are a DU treasure!

6. Oh, I'm so glad you like them!

I love it when DUers tell me their stories about encounters with some of the works I put up. And I cannot tell you how many times a DUer will tell me that that art history 101 course they took way back when they were undergrads has always stayed with them over the years as a great experience! My own husband, not an artist or an art history buff, fondly recalls such a course as a lowly college freshman and wrote a paper that the prof really liked! Now that's going back a LONG time...LOL...
