RAF jets will be based in Italy and deployed primarily in a reconnaissance role

Britain is to send four more RAF Tornado jets to join international operations against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya, the Ministry of Defence said . Senior military spokesman Major General Nick Pope said the Tornado GR4s –to be based at Gioia del Colle in Italy – would be deployed primarily in a reconnaissance role. The deployment will take the total number of RAF fast jets committed to Operation Unified Protector to 22. Earlier this week Nato secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on members to provide more aircraft to protect Libyan civilians.
