Larry Flynt Righteously Scolds Rupert Murdoch
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 09:19 AM by kpete
Excerpt:

"No matter how offensive or distasteful some people may find Hustler magazine and my other publications, no one has appeared unwillingly in their pages. I do not create sensationalism at the expense of people living private lives. After the Watergate scandal, a new generation of reporters striving for raw, honest journalism was born. Now, Murdoch's actions have sent us in the opposite direction. Will his alleged machinations further degrade what little faith people have in what they read in their newspapers? The print industry is already suffering economically, and any more deterioration brings newspapers and magazines closer to extinction."

No matter what you think of his smut (and yes, he calls himself a smut peddler), he has done some amazing work protecting the First Amendment.

I still won't ever buy his magazines, but he's earned my respect.

The hero against the Murdoch Empire there is Hugh Grant. A guy who was caught receiving "Car Head" from a prostitute.

6. If you know Flynt's record on First Amendment issues
it's been surreal for a very long time.

FWIW, I had a woman friend who worked in a store that sold Hustler back in the 70s, the heyday of its outrage. She enjoyed it as an over the top satire of other skin mags and awaited every issue eagerly.

I guess one person's satire is another person's outrage.

19. It's their choice.
I've known strippers that loved their jobs and how they could manipulate men into giving them money for a "dance". As a woman, I don't feel the least bit threatened by porn or the supposed "denigration" of women that have the option of not taking their clothes off for money. I actually hired one friend because I was naive enough to believe it would be better for her to have a "real" job. She quit a few months later because she was bored to tears and wasn't making enough money. I finally got up the nerve to go watch her dance. Yeah...she was a better stripper than a typesetter. She's "retired" now (she's 43). Saved up enough money to get a nursing degree, but misses dancing. She's still friggin gorgeous and in great shape with a truly loving husband (that she met at a club) and two little boys.

Oh, and one of my exes (a man) made quite a bit of money doing porn. It's shameful how society denigrates gay/bisexual men. Can't believe these two actually enjoyed the freedom to do what they wanted.

yes. lets, as women, embrace and thank this woman, using her body to manipulate another for $. because it is not as if we women, as a whole, are not already battling the stereotype that we are users, using our sexuality, to get the $ from the men. yes, we can all be thankful to this woman for reinforcing a stereotype that many of us abhor and resent having ourselves be label as.

as a matter of fact, we are fighting a whole new cult behaviorists telling us that is exactly who we are. we dont enjoy sex, want sex, we just want to use man..... it is after all, part of our dna.

Stern mocks people, Flynt does not. Stern himself is a hypocrite, no one could ever call Flynt a hypocrite.

And I agree with Warpy I would go to a party Larry Flynt, but not Stern. I actually was invited to a party and told that 'Howard Stern would be there' to get me to go. My BF laughed, knowing there was no way I would go to a party attended by Stern. But had it been Larry Flynt, I would have gone.

Have you ever watched his show? I just don't find him funny, or entertaining, but a lot of people do and sometimes he has been right about things, but mostly he's only interested in things that directly affect him.

Larry Flynt put his body and his money where his mouth is. He went to bat for the 1st Amendment and paid a big price for that. He abhors hypocrisy and even if you hate what he does, you could never say he was a hypocrite about it.

I give him credit for almost single-handedly saving the Clinton presidency. He's clever and knows how to expose hypocrites and bullies.

13. You mean like the politicians do? Hookers, mistresses, sexual harassment, the list goes on
Now the head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) is accused of raping a made, that got dropped, and now a reporter has stepped forward with charges as well. I don't know where that stands but the skinny for me is that men in power start thinking they can do any damn thing they want to their underlings and their playthings.

No disrespect intended but your high horse has its blinders on. I respect your right to your opinion and as a father I agree that my daughter and all women need to be treated with equal rights and receive equal pay.

But as the OP states, the women who go in his magazine do so willingly. Look at Paris Hilton. What did she do to "get famous" so she could have a line of perfume, jewelry for pre-teens, etc. Look at the Kardashian girl (don't watch it so don't know her name) and how she first got into the press. Hint: a sex tape as I recall.

These were all calculated moves made willingly by the women involved. The piece of trash guy in the Hilton video went on TV bragging that he could make other women famous and I vaguely remember at least one taking him up on it. Willingly.

The First Amendment protects the people you agree with *and* the people you don't. If it were any other way then it would be meaningless.

It sounds like you are putting alleged rapists like the guy from the IMF on the same level with women agreeing willingly (and are paid pretty darn well) to be photographed for a magazine? Or willingly arranging cameras and having sexual activity with someone that she doesn't even know?

You may have a more emotional connection to Mr. Flynt than I do. I never buy his magazine, nor any of his competitors but I generally know the content. I just don't understand your reaction in light of what the First Amendment actually means.

20. a person can use the same argument with fundies and other religion. the women willing allow
themselves to be subjugated, inferior, dominated and controlled, in the name of the lord in so many ways.

every. person. on. du. would criticize the group and the women for allowing themselves to be reduced to nothing better than an animal, if that. but because there are women that willingly walk into this profession we say... oh no, they are not degrading themselves, they do it willingly. flynt is not scum. a creep. a bottom feeder, these women do it readily.

wrong.

24. Men are responsible for the degradation of women, even those who are willing and who make big $$$
Am I to understand from your post that men are always to blame and women should shoulder none of the burden of blame for their own willing actions?

What about Paris Hilton and her sex tapes? Was she also a "victim" of a scum, creep, bottom feeder when she agreed to leak her sex tape? All in the interest of making herself famous (or infamous, I guess it doesn't matter nowadays).

Or the Kardashian girl and her sex tape... was she also a "victim" and not a willing participant in a publicity seeking effort that eventually landed her a lucrative TV show and who knows how many millions so far???

Let's not be one-sided in our thinking here. If men are always to blame and women are always "innocent little butterflies who get taken advantage of" then we have a double standard. The law is not supposed to allow for double standards and neither is the First Amendment.

Sorry if the truth hurts.

that was not my point or discussion at all.

you argued the women did it willingly, ergo, it was not degradation. my point was, women willingly submit in te religious doctrine and we call it what it is.

i am calling this what it is even though women willingly participate. they made their choice to be degraded for whatever reason. and there are many reasons. and men promote, enjoy and pay for that degradation, for many reasons.

the same as in the religious faction. but reality is, there is an inferior and superior role.

36. You bring up religion. Do you think that GOD made men aroused by the nude female form by accident?
Do you think that the pheromone sensor in our nose is there by accident? This sensor detects the pheromones in male sweat and causes attraction in women. That is proven by science. Whether you believe it was GOD or evolution, we are wired with a need to procreate and be attracted to the opposite sex.

63. Or marriage. Where do you draw the line?
Lots of womyn get dressed up to display their assets when they go out husband-hunting. Take Jane Random, an office clerk as an example. In the evenings she likes goes out clubbing in a tight low-cut dress, clean-shaven legs, maybe panties, maybe not. One night she meets a well-off executive. He likes her, she likes him, and he takes her home for the night on a trial run. He likes what she offers, and they start a longer-term relationship. He showers her with jewelry. They marry, she quits her job and lives on his income while keeping herself fit and attractive to him, entertains his business friends, enjoys the jewelry and vacations he still showers on her, and in return makes herself sexually available to him during his off-work hours. Everybody looks at her and admires "how well she married", and how well she used what God gave her in that endeavour.

Where is the line between this and the girl who dances for a living instead of clerking in an office?

to be treated like pieces of meat. I wouldn't do it. Never would have. Don't understand why women do it other than that they desperately need the money, but who am I to judge another person's personal decision?

As Flynt explains, he only prints photos of people who are willing to appear in his magazine. That is more than you can say for the tabloids.

What would you prefer if you were a 20-year-old woman -- to appear in Hustler without much or anything on for a goodly sum toward your college tuition -- or have an embarrassing picture of you taken surreptitiously and printed in The Daily Mail without compensation?

I wouldn't want either, but Murdoch is even more offensive than Flynt if you stop to think about it.

I used to freelance for one of Flynt's magazines back when he had over a 100. They ranged from Hustler to mags for kids, mags for brides, mags for skateboarding, mags for sailing, etc.
I asked a guy who worked for HUSTLER how they found the women to pose in their magazines. His answer was that they did not have to look, they had more women than they needed constantly calling and writing in to be in the magazine.

96. I don't agree with the phrase 'piece of meat.'

People use these overwrought, cliched metaphors about pornographic images it without really thinking about what they're saying. It makes me yearn for the days when they would day her "virtue has been violated." At least that makes the process and consequences somewhat clearer. Those consequences are overwhelmingly psychological and social, and not physically murderous and cannibalistic. At least that's a little more accurate and far less over-the-top.

No, a Hustler model hasn't been used like a piece of meat. She's been gazed at by men who used her image (not her physical meat) as a focus for masturbation. Now, that's disturbing, but not horrifying. It's not in the same class as murder, butchery and cannibalism.

solution for me. But if women want to pose for Hustler and get paid so men they will probably never meet can drool over them, that's their business, not mine.

In any case, Flynt has done far less damage to society than Rupert Murdoch and his minions of fascist propaganda.

Ironic you should make that statement after referring to "the surreal." You could argue that he treats women badly, or he hires them to do dishonorable things (which they then voluntarily do), but they are in no way sent to his photographers for slaughter. The "piece of meat" statement is unconnected to anything real. It's beyond surreal.

I'll take an honest smut peddler over a dishonest media mogul any day.

22. Only if you think sex is degrading
Some people (of both sexes, even) actually enjoy sex and showing off. Once they find out that people will pay for it, they realize social mores for what they are -- hypocrisy.

23. sex is not degrading. porn on the other hand is sure to be made degrading toward women
because it is the fantasy and turn on of the man. to pretend the porn is not intentionally made to be degrading to women is to be naive (which i dont believe anyone is) or dismissive of concern for a representation of female.

29. According to Oprah's website, yes. And 66% of UK women admit to watch porn
http://www.oprah.com/relationships/Do-Women-Watch-Porn
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/article2355510.ece

Science is finally buying into the idea that women are at least as stimulated by porn as men.

In a 2006 study at McGill University, researchers monitored genital temperature changes to measure sexual arousal and found that, when shown porn clips, men and women alike began displaying arousal within 30 seconds; men reached maximum arousal in about 11 minutes, women in about 12 (a statistically negligible difference, according to the study).

Even more compelling were the results of a 2004 study at Northwestern University that also assessed the effect of porn on genital arousal. Mind you, a copy of "Buffy the Vampire Layer" and a lubed-up feedback device isn't most girls' idea of a hot night in. But when the researchers showed gay, lesbian, and straight porn to heterosexual and homosexual women and men, they found that while the men responded more intensely to porn that mirrored their particular gender orientation, the women tended to like it all. Or at least their bodies did. Oprah.com How to feel good naked

35. you are right. and that is all well and good. reality though, is all women
are being seen as mens whores, personal porn player. women are seeing themselves in these manners and behavior accomodates. men are seeing women in this manner and behavior accomodates. just the change in mens language towards women is evidence in this. milf. hit it. piece of ass. it is becoming more the norm for men to talk to women in a degrading manner. where do you think that comes from?

hit it

an it

to be

hit.

so often men will defend the womans right to be a stripper, prostitute, porner... but then they will be the first to degrade, demean, bad mouth the kims, hiltons stripper or prostitute, telling us all how they really see these women.

trick of the hands. defend at all cost when talking about themselves being entertained but clearly letting all us know these women garner no respect at all.

one doesnt need to just point the finger at the pearl clutcher, swoon on coucher, church lady, that is so much fun for all.

40. because this is another manner of control and dominance.
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 12:28 PM by seabeyond
do you pay attention to what is happening in the mans role that now they cannot say a woman belongs in the kitchen their only role now for the men is to "hit it". it is a mannner that they control and dominate. in all the ads, in the tv shows in the movies it is all about the womans sexuality being there to entertain man. and the mans priority is taking care of his sexaulity.

in the order for the woman be embrace her sexuality, it is handing it over to the man.

does the man ever hand over his sexuality to the woman?

take victoria secret. at first it was all about the woman being sexual. about it all being for her. then in the 90's the company flipped and started giving the womans sexuality to the man. it started being for the man. now they present it to the man and tell the women to immulate these models. instead of embracing their own sexuality.

the cult evolution behaviorist glorifies the male sexuality and reduces the woman to be used by the man because that is the way he is made. they speak nothing of the womans sexuality. but it is all the mans biologial dna.

media always presents male sexuality as all that ignoring the womans unless the woman is their entertaining the man.

where is the honoring of the womans sexuality.

she only has sex cause she wants money.

it is a time in our society when a womans sexuality is used against her not as the virgin, but as the whore and women are willingly playing in the name of sexual freedom. and it is not

in my time, when as a group we stripped down naked to skinny dip, everyone stripped down, played and had fun. today, the guys stay clothed, gather in groups and yell boobie boobie... show us your boobie.

i have watched more men use porn as a weapon against their women, than couples enjoying it together, yet we pretend it is all good.

there is a lack of honesty.

You think about porn a heck of a lot more than I do. I am kind of an old prude to it all, but in my single days and today with employees and their goings on I think I am just behind the curve. I think women think about and talk dirty more than men even. Good lord if I got in on a women's conversation about sex.

it is different than a mere decade and half ago. i have people coming to me... ending their marriages, because of the excessiveness and ready access to porn. it is not in my life, but it is in my world. it is better to understand what is evolving than ignore it. this is effecting who we are as a people, both genders and it is playing out in studies that are coming out today.

i would rather my kids have a healthy, robust sex life, not a messed up on because we are not informed.

39. Please read the links in post #29 - women watch porn
Women make up 1/3rd of the audience for online porn (stated in one of those links).

Sex is not dirty or evil and being attracted to the opposite sex is not against GOD's will. "Go forth and multiply..." Sex is good and pure and natural; it bonds two lovers together via a chemical called Oxytocin (ref: http://www.oxytocin.org/oxytoc/love-science.html ).

It does not matter whether you believe we are (both men and women) naturally and chemically wired to be attracted to our sexual partners - the facts speak for themselves. Please go argue with GOD or the missing link (if you can find it). I've spent far too much time on this topic.

56. On Real Time, Bill asked the difference between Flynt and Murdoch
This is it right here.

He has standards. There are things he won't do. He won't destroy lives just for the giggles of being able to do so.

Yeah, there is a hard core handful of people here who will claim otherwise based on the fact that that he publishes something they don't like. But we have had this debate before.. ad nauseum in fact and the anti-porn side never really seems able to prove their case. The central argument seems more a pavlovian response, especially here where more effort it given to attacking Flynt as a person then in considering what he is saying here.

Even the devil can have a good point

IF one thinks the first amendment is about people printing what you want to see, then that person really has missed the point.

I find it interesting how certain people on this thread are more than willing to paint entire groups of people as the same. Women this or Men that. There are plenty of people even in the liberal sphere who need to realize that this world is not experienced entirely from their own perspective.

Fight for your cause or beliefs but leave the stereotyping at the door. This is a huge world filled with many people none of whom are exactly the same, jeepers.
