Alleged bilker, back in U.S., is arraigned

Article by: DAN BROWNING , Star Tribune Updated: July 15, 2011 - 9:20 PM

Regulators say Jeffery Lowrance trolled for investors at a Twin Cities rally in the 2008 GOP convention and later fled to Peru.

A California man who trolled for investors at a Minneapolis political rally for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul's 2008 presidential campaign was arraigned Friday in Illinois on charges that he bilked at least $25 million from more than 400 people, including some Minnesotans.

Jeffery A. Lowrance, 50, allegedly targeted political conservatives and Christian investors in what investigators characterize as a bogus foreign-currency investment scheme. According to court records unsealed Friday, Lowrance lost the investors' money and fled to Peru as authorities closed in on him two years ago. He was arrested there in February and was just extradited to the United States. snip

The SEC's suit says that Lowrance and First Capital solicited investors on the Internet, by word-of-mouth referrals, through cold-calls and mass mailings, and by reaching out to members of Christian communities. snip

"He was apparently a big bowler. So he would {offer} a $150,000 prize at bowling tournaments," she said. "He did give $100,000 to Ron Paul, so we're going to see if Mr. Paul will give it back."

2. We need an army of these guys.
If they're going to piss their money away on Tea Party candidates and tithing anyway, might as well tap that resource.
